Chapter Two: Louisa

Everything was ready. At long bloody last! Louisa did a final check of the car, making sure that everything was loaded in safely and wasn’t going to fall out and break. She couldn’t believe it – finally moving! The past month at her parents’ house had been absolute hell. I mean who in their right frame of mind would want to go back to living with their parents when they were twenty one?! Not that Louisa had a choice, of course. With two kids to look after she needed a roof for their heads – her mum and dad’s was the only option. Now, at long last, she’d found the perfect house in Florida. Her own house.

She slammed the car door shut as she climbed in, checking that her two kids were ok in the back seat. Dylan was curled up half asleep in his carrier seat, beginning to doze off – he was five months old and stupidly docile and content at all times. Madison however, was the opposite. At two and a half years old, she was very alert and very clever – too clever sometimes. She looked up from her picture book, smiling at her mum. Louisa smiled back.

“You ready, Maddy?” she asked quietly, not wanting to disturb Dylan. You see, if he woke up now – he would scream the entire way there. No one wanted that to happen. Madison nodded, casting a fleeting look back at her Nan and Grandad’s house and waving sadly out of the window. Louisa’s mum and dad were standing on their doorstep, waiting to wave them goodbye. It was sad in a way … I mean, the new house was only an hour away, which wasn’t too far to travel. But even so.

Louisa took a deep, calming breath before waving back at her parents and winding down the car window. “I’ll call you when we get there!” Louisa assured them. Boy was she going to miss them – even if they were her parents.

“Make sure you do,” her dad called back. “Have a good journey!”

Louisa nodded, switching on the car engine and reversing out of the drive. “See ya!” she waved, fighting to keep back the tears. “Enjoy the peace – we’ll be back to visit before you even know we’ve gone!” She stuck out her tongue playfully and sped off down the road to where, an hour away, the new house was waiting for her.
