| <--- PART 1 7 MONTHS LATER Liz adjusted her bag as she made her way onto the crowded train, scanning the packed carriage for a pole or rail to hold onto. Spotting one, she held on to it and focused her attention elsewhere, looking out the grimy window. The train moved from station to station, becoming more crowded at each stop and Liz let her mind wander, completely oblivious to her surroundings. Suddenly, the carriage jerked to a stop and two firm, round breasts pressed into Lizs back. Excuse me, the young woman pardoned herself and offered the doctor a small smile of apology. The older woman simply nodded and turned away again, her mind registering how gorgeous the offenders smile was. *Just what I need,* she thought. *Now all Ill be able to think about during my meeting with Jack and his new lay ASSOCIATE Liz, associate,* she corrected herself, * is that gorgeous womans boobs, eyes and smile. Great.* When Liz turned to get off at her station, the woman had already made her way off the train. *Out of the station and out of my life,* she sighed. Noticing she was early a rare occurrence on days she didnt drive, Liz stopped to pick up a cup of coffee and go over the information Jack had couriered over to her the previous day. She sat down on a bench, reviewing the case file as well as Jacks notes. Liz scanned the pages, seeing the words but not really taking them in. She simply couldnt stay focused as her mind wandered from the file on her lap back to the brunette- she seemed familiar, yet Liz was sure shed remember someone like that. Slowly, her thoughts drifted back to the present and she looked at her watch before getting up and sighing. She should have left five minutes ago. *Damn, I hate being late,* she cursed as she hurried along the crowded sidewalk to the Manhattan District Attorneys Office. A few minutes later, she found herself knocking on Jacks office door and entering. Liz. Hi, long time no see, he greeted her. Yeah, Ive been busy, she replied. There was a timid knock on the office door as a dark head peered in. Come on in. Liz, this is Abbie Carmichael. Abbie, this is Dr. Elizabeth Olivet. Liz glanced up at the person who had just entered the room and recognized her immediately. *The woman from the train!* Liz thought, fighting an almost irresistible grin. Hi, umm I think weve met, Abbie said, slightly embarrassed. Yes, we have, the doctor replied. You have? Jack asked, confused. He was sure Abbie had ignored his pleas for her to make an appointment with Liz months ago. Maybe hed misjudged her? We have, Abbie confirmed. Opting to respect the womens comfort and privacy instead of satisfying his own sense of curiosity, Jack responded with a simple nod before opening the file in front of him and began to discuss the case. Alexander Tedesco was the heir to his parents multi-million dollar estate. His uncle and only living relative had clubbed him to death with a rolling pin to gain access to the family fortune and was now pleading temporary insanity in an attempt to dodge a prison sentence. Jack wanted Liz to give an independent evaluation on which he could base his discussion regarding a sentencing recommendation. Ill see him this afternoon, Liz said. Where are they holding him? Bellevue, Jack replied. He doesnt seem to present a danger to himself or others, but Im not a psychiatrist so we played it safe. Hes got enough money to be able to afford a slew of good lawyers and if something happened to him at Rikers I didnt want it blowing up in our faces. Good call, Jack. Ill drop my report in tomorrow morning. Liz said, standing. Its good to have you back on board, Liz, smiled Jack. Its good to be back. Ill see you tomorrow. Nice to meet you, Ms. Carmichael, Liz said, walking to the door. Please, call me Abbie, the young ADA offered, speaking for the first time since they had been introduced. Nice to meet you, Abbie, Liz corrected herself with a smile, leaving and closing the door behind her. She walked along the hallway to the elevator, pressed the button and stepped through the sliding doors. As soon as they were shut she relinquished control of the ear-to-ear grin that had been fighting her since Abbie walked into the room *I have a feeling Im going to like this case,* she sighed as the elevator made its descent.
