Fancy Free Island, Big Rideau Lake, Ontario

Recently, when reading a traveller's guide, I hit upon the phrase that describes perfectly what I look for in accommodation when I travel: the 'search for lovable authenticity'.

I  think that the people who come to stay on Fancy Free island are, like me when I travel, looking for a very special sort of place with lovable authenticity: a place off the beaten track, in the midst of stunning natural scenery, and with beautiful buildings- a place that is full of character, comfortable and slightly eccentric. A country retreat that is a true escape from the hurly burly of day to day life. A place where dreams can be dreamt in peace.

Fancy Free is just such a place-it is magical. The island is as perfect as an island can get- full of trees, with a low rock wall and a little beach, and close to the mainland but far enough away for true privacy. Big Rideau Lake is incredibly beautiful. It is clean and deep, full of lake trout and bass, unspoiled, with air so fresh and pure that just breathing is a pleasure. The cottage (it's really a summer home)  is a real old Victorian, a dignfied and charming structure that has been lovingly restored. The porch is 12 feet deep!

We  take pride in the fact that families keep returning to Fancy Free year after year, coming from as far away as Scotland. There are very few islands in Canada as perfectly suited for an old-fashioned  family holiday as Fancy Free. It is truly one of a kind. At least that's what people keep telling us!

We invite you to come and enjoy this idyllic and ultimately most Canadian of cottages. Bookings for 2008 will be taken starting mid-July of 2007.
