Subject:  Weekend Project - Vintage Photo Plant Stake

As summertime is fast approaching, many people begin to attend concerts, while others attend concerts throughout the year. So, we thought it fitting to put together a series of craft ideas that will take you from now, into the summer, where you can feature your Hall & Oates photos/names/initials, in a variety of ways, that would be suitable, as a fan, for you to use while possibly attending one of their concerts.

The Weekend Project for today is, a "Vintage Photo Plant Stake!"   Initially, the book labels this project as the "Vintage Photo Plant Poke," but I don't particularly care for the word poke, so, for this project, we are referring to it as the "Vintage Photo Plant Stake."

Now, granted this is something you can't take with you to a concert, unless of course you want to, but I don't think you'd get past security with it...LOL!!! ...but, since today, I've purchased a small, little, cheapo greenhouse, I thought this project would be
fun, as I like growing my own herbs and veggies, and over the weekend, I'll be assembling the green house, and work on potted plants. Of course, I've been successful with some herbs in the past, but fruits and veggies has been a total bomb...none-the-less, I'm trying again this year.

At any rate, in order to make this a seemingly fun project for concert goers, I thought that we would incorporate it into a project where you could grow some of your own herbs indoors, outdoors, or in a greenhouse, where you could not only display your cool Hall & Oates Vintage Photo Plant Stakes, but, with the herbs you grow, you
can steep them to brew your own cup of "herbal tea," or bag as a tea bath which could be both soothing and relaxing, prior to your leaving for the concert, or, you can use some of the herbs you grow to make your own "smudge stick," to bless your car and your path, prior to leaving for the concert.

Following the directions for the "Vintage Photo Plant Stake," you will find links to sites where you can learn to also make smudge sticks, and find recipes for herbal teas for drinking or the bath.   For a sample pix of the "Vintage Photo Plant Stake," it can be
viewed in the photos section.

Materials:

- Delta: Black Ceramcoate acrylic paint Gold Gleams paint Decoupage
medium
- 1 gold paper clip
- 1 Woodsie 1-1/2 " square
- Black felt
- 4 small black photo corners
- Round toothpick
- Pony bead
- 1/4 yard gold embroidery floss
- 8" length #18-gauge green covered wire
- Green florist tape
- Small sprig of ivy
- Acid-free glue

Instructions for mini-frames (beginning with steps 5-7)

5. Take photos of choice, trace "one" woodsie square on each photo and cut out. Glue four black photo corners on each photo.   Paint each square black. When dry, glue one photo on each square.  Place squares under heavy object for several hours. Paint squares with several coats of decoupage.

6. Cut squares of black felt. Glue felt squares on back of wooden ones.   Dip round toothpick in gold acrylic paint and place dot on each photo corner as shown. For hanger, glue paper clip on center back of each photo square, having 1/4" of paper clip show above photo frame.

7. NOTE: This step is not necessary for this project, as it is for the actual picture frame decorated with mini-frames, which is not a part of the project instructions below:

Instructions for Plant Stake:

1. Follow steps 5-7 above to make one mini frame. Tie several short lengths of gold floss on top of paper clip.

2. Warp 7" length of covered wire witih floral tape. Glue wire to back of photo frame, extending wire 1" above top of frame.  Insert wire through pony bead. Bend wire and place end in bead. Glue sprig of ivy on back of frame.

Initially, we got the idea for this project from,
"Book Title: More than Memories II
Description: Creative Techniques for Preserving Your Family History"

Copyright 1999, Krause Publications, all rights reserved.

If you're not interested in "buying" this book, it's most certainly worth checking out, at your local library, and it has a variety of excellent ideas!

Of course, as usual, there was room to improvise!

This project was definitely interesting. I mostly decided to use small pix' of the various Hall & Oates albums and a few photos of Daryl Hall and one of John Oates.

VINTAGE PHOTO PLANT STAKE:

I had a fantastic time doing this project! It was incredibly fun, easy, and didn't take long at all.

I only made "one," but, will periodically make others with different colors of beads, and photos.

As with the Vintage Photo Necklace, I had to put a double stick'n'peel on the back, so that I could affix all of the wiring, and the actual stake. Instead of using wire and floral tape for the stake, I used an old paint brush, primarily because I liked the
shape of it, and it had coils towards the base of the brush that looked cool.

I slightly painted the brush a copper color, to match the overall theme of the Vintage Photo Plant Stake.

For the actual "label," identifying "Lemon Verbena," I took a copy of two portraits, one of "Ghost Dancer," and one of a ballerina which I cropped to use only a portion of, and added a sunburst and the wording.

I fed into the overall label, in the far background, a pix of Lemon Verbena, and a portion of a piano keyboard set in black with a few red roses. On the surface, this means nothing, but underneath the surface it means everything.

SMUDGE STICK:

For the "smudge stick," I combined rue, rosemary, juniper, and sage, it smells great, and if I ever need to go anywhere, outside of my planet, you can rest assured I'll be perfectly safe!!!!  LOL!!!!!

NOTE: For those of you who are wondering what I mean by that statement, as Administrator of E to the Third Power (TM), I'm on-site 24 hours a day, and work up to 16 sometimes 18 hours a day, and have only left the site around three or four times, over the past four years.

Overall, concentrated effort on the "Vintage Photo Plant Stake" took about 20 minutes to include proper drying time for the "Mod Podge."   Overall, concentrated effort on the "Smudge Stick," assembly, took around 15 minutes, simply because I had to cut the smaller stems from their larger stems, and then, I separated them into five bundles.

If you haven't tried this project, it's never too late!
