The Anime Review By Moggy
Escaflowne the series is, or should be, an Anime standard. This is a
story that is well put together from beggining to end, along with having good
animation and aural presenation( ie, voice acting and background music). You
can't really pick on much about the series, except that everything in it is
good, not great. The animation is not earth shaking, and the story while
original in a sense, is basically a gigantic romance with a base theme of
'destiny'. Some of the characters are annoying, especially the female
protagonist and her wishy washy feelings feelings for Allen and Van, though it
all fits into the story and can be forgiven. Keep your eyes peeled for one
scene involving a fight between the Escaflowne and the Sherizad. ts one of the
few awe inspiring moments in the series. 7 out of 10.
Escaflowne the movie is almost an entirely different beast. While many of
the characters have the same name and a similar look, they are all very VERY
different. The story is much the same, with a few adjustments to fit it into
the shorter time frame. The one major change is that the movie is an action
oriented piece, not a romance. Added to that is the fact that the animation is
far superior. But it is still give and take compared to the series. While the
action and animation is better than in the series, the actual character
development suffers, as does some of the story. 7 of 10
Bottom line, if you're looking for a romance, or a story that will fill up
your time, choose the series. If you desire action, or want a quicker fix,
choose the movie.
