Our History
SISTUHS, Incorporated  was conceptualized in the Fall of 1992, and became an official organization in the Spring of 1993. The organization was founded by Ms. Akiba Jackson and Ms. Germaine Smith-Baugh, under the advisement of Joann Clark. These innovative African-American women, along with 15 other astute young ladies felt  there was a need to establish an organization where African-American women would be able to discuss and implement programs that would contribute to the development and well-being of the community. The purpose of SISTUHS, Inc. was and is to foster an environment conducive to learning about the history and role women of color have in this society and to develop local leadership to respond to the community needs. Furthermore,  the organization was created to provide a means for African-American women to gain a deeper  appreciation for the history and role African-American women have played and continue to play in this and other societies.
