Probably born in Lancashire. Sometime, probably shortly before his father died,
William's family moved to Timahoe, Ireland, about 1716-17. They stayed there
only a short time and then moved to Dublin. By 1719 his father, Joshua
Whitaker, had been killed on the Isle of Man, and that same year William, age
18, submitted a request to the monthly meeting of the Quaker Society in Dublin
for a Certificate of Removal to Pennsylvania. (The Society minutes state,
"William Whitaker, formerly of Timahoe, now of Dublin") - from the book THE
WHITAKER FAMILY OF BUNCOMBE CO., NC, by C. Bruce Whitaker, whose source was
given as Records, (Quaker): New Garden and Kennett (Newark) Monthly Meeting.
She came to America when she was about 10 years of age. The first announcement
of her marriage to William was made Jan. 5, 1722 at Kennett Monthly Meeting
(Quaker); second announcement was made Feb. 2, 1722, same congregation; actual
marriage took place in Kennett Square, Chester, Penna., on Feb 13, 1722.
William & Elizabeth lived in Kennett Square, Chester Co., PA from 1722 to 1734,
when they apparently moved to Bradford, also in Chester Co. A list of Land
Warrants in Bradford & vicinity dated August 1734 shows William Whitaker with
100 acres of land next to Nathaniel Newton & William Buffington. Four years
later in Dec. 1739 the family were all packed and ready to move back to Kennett
Square when a catastrophic fire destroyed their home and nearly everything
they owned including their seed intended for planting the following spring.
The only item saved was the Family Bible. Still carrying the marks of fire
damage, it has come down through the family and is currently in possession of
Mrs. M. L. Kirstein of Asheville (North Carolina).
Their need for help was in question because they belonged to the Kennett
Monthly Meeting but were living in Bradford. It was resolved on Sept. 17,
1741. The Kennett group contributed 3/4 of their aid and the Bradford group 1/4
contingent upon being received into the Bradford group, which was effective May
20, 1742, the same day their daughter Lydia was excluded from membership for
marrying outside the Quaker faith.
