THE MUNRO - McLAREN SAGA

Written for Ian and June (nee McLaren) Munro’s
40th Wedding Anniversary 1997
By Valerie Lawrence (nee McLaren)

In '34 in Southland
A Scottish lad appeared
His name was Ian Lachlan
And the Munro Clan all cheered.

A Rep diver was our Ian
For his province I believe
I can just see him in his speedos
With his knobbly knees.

But his chosen game was soccer
Satin shorts and all
He not only dribbled as a baby
He also dribbled the ball.

He's a dab with the camera
So you have to watch what you do
When Ian's lurking round
He'll catch the worst of you.

Now in '35 in Hawkes Bay
A bonnie lass arrived
Margaret June was her name
To the Clan McLaren's pride.

And in her childhood days
As her brother Mervyn knows
Little toddler June
Had a problem with her clothes.

It was to her Mothers consternation
When her knickers would disappear
They were never in the wash
They were always here and there.

They were down by the mailbox
Or under the willow tree
We don't know why she did it
Perhaps she felt free?
Now June in her hey day
Was a gun with the basketball
Picked for Hawkes Bay, Southland and N.Z.
It's a wonder Ian caught her at all.

She was also brilliant at knitting
And that annoyed me a lot
It was KNIT 1 - PURL 1 without even looking
And she never lost a jot!

These two affore here mentiones
Met at a skating rink
Short skirt, shorts and shapely legs
They looked quite good we think.

They were married in Hastings
In nineteen Fifty Seven
And both of them were convinced
That they were in seventh heaven.

Russell arrived in '58
And Shona 2 years on
And 3 years later Sandra came
Their peace and quite was gone.

Then the offspring started
To increase the clan
Sandra and Craig off the mark
With 3 lassies and a lad.

And Shona and Jon
Not to be outdone
Have produced so far
A daughter and a son.

Now Russell and Ingrid
They have a little daughter
They're the lastest to produce
Coz they thought they oughta!

June and Ian have 7 grandchildren
And they're both puffed up with pride
And as a good old Pop and Nana
They'll take it in their stride.

Now I love my sister dearly
But hey! Can I hark back over 40 years
When she used to flog my clothes
And leave me standing in tears.

We are very happy to be here
Even though we weren't invited
But we knew that wouldn't matter
Coz these two would be delighted.
It's congratulations to June and Ian
On their 40 years together
And for the future
Good sailing and fair weather.
