Did You Miss Me? Did You Cry?by G.M. Davis "Did You Miss Me? Did You Cry?" are the first words spoken by four-year-old Michael when he returns home after being in a foster home. Michael and his brother and sister were taken away by the Department of Health and Human Resources; then they were returned to their father by the court. This narrative gives an account of an Appalachian family who sought help from this social agency. The author strives to remain objective as she tells what happens to the three children and their parents. The mother sums up her resignation, "They can't do anything more to me now." But it is the children who suffer the most. They were taken from their home at night, and although they were returned, they feared every day that they could be taken away again. Their bipolar mother must leave the home, and the eleven-year-old goes into a residential facility. In the end, four-year-old Michael is the most traumatized when he can't see the grandmother he loves. The social worker forbade any contact with the woman who had tried to help the family over the years! The book has a poignant poem, along with references to internet information and books. There's a brief copy of the laws dealing with the taking of children from their parents.
