This project was inspired by reading short stories about famous people in history.  As an extended writing project, Ms. Spencer asked her students to find a person with whom the hared the same birth date.  Students were asked to research the person they had selected.  During the reading and research phase they were asked to figure out a turning point in that famous person's life that made them what they became in the eyes of the world.
After researching, students were asked to write an autobiographical experieince from the viewpoint of the famous person.  This paper was specifically about the moment in time when thier famous person gained insight or knowledge of their life's achievement.
This was a difficult project for sixth graders who must move in part from the operational-concrete, into the abstract and imaginative format.  Some were more successful than others.  But each student was able to "walk in another person's shoes" if only for a brief time.  This project met the goal of reading, writing, researching, note taking, synthesis and analitical thinking.  Finally, it served as a model for writing autobiographical essays.
