A
rgal Reservoir isn't very well known but I believe it has promise and will try to turn up a rarity here soon! The south end has potential to attract waders in autumn if water levels are low enough. I've had common sandpiper from the bird hide this autumn (2006) and the mud must be attractive to other waders with luck! The reservoir has a local reputation just behind that of Stithians for ducks but this winter so far has only seen 5 Goosander, 1 Tufted Duck and 1 Great-crested Grebe.
Argal has a flat circular walk bordering the perimeter of the reservoir and is bordered by some young woodland, and some mature woodland at the western end. There are also stretches of bracken covered slopes which attract small passerines on migration; chiffchaffs often present.
Past rarities have included Great White Egret (2002), Mediterranean Gull (2003+2006), and Purple Heron (2006)
