3rd December 2007
Today brought out the best of birding in Falmouth. I was practically all done at College Res after a couple of hours and a duck popped up not far in front of me. After quickly setting up the scope again I was looking at a female Ring-necked Duck all the way from the N.American continent. It showed the characteristically striking face pattern with white eye-ring and short trailing line from the eye as on female Pochards and also a bright cream area around the base of the bill. No pics sadly but I really think I wouldn't have found the bird with the camera in tow. Just superstition kicking in! This sighting represents at least the 3rd bird in the last 2 years this bird possibly returning from last winter. 1 Med Gull (ad), 2 Kingfisher, 3 Marsh Tits all showed during the sunny but windy walk this morning. A great day!

The Ring-necked Duck was still present today at College Reservoir although proving hard to see. It is currently located in the small marshy south-west arm of the res associating with Wigeons and Coots. The woodland had lots to offer even in the dull gloom of the recent weather. A Treecreeper showed all too briefly, a good record for the area though as they seem to be scarce around here. 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Marsh Tits, 1 Coal Tit, Long-tailed Tits, 5 Goldcrests, c20 Redwings and c40 Starlings were all present with varying degrees of elusiveness that makes woodland watching at this time of year fun but tricky! 1 Med Gull was hanging out on the water with 4 Common Gulls.
