Bittern - This was the overwintering bird from 2007-2008. Seen and missed by many, only showing well to a select few!
Falmouth Area Scarce + Rarities - 2006 Onwards -
Black Redstart - Often present at Castle Beach, Falmouth throughout the winter at mid tide. 4 were present in 2007 winter.
Iceland Gull - This bird visited College Reservoir in early 2007 for couple of days only. This is one of the best sites to catch up with the species in Cornwall.
Marsh Tit - This scarce resident is present at College Reservoir but tricky to catch up with. Knowing the call is fairly crucial and an easy way to find several in a walk.
Merlin - Not the best picture in the world (probably the worst!) but a scarce bird in the area. Stithians Reservoir area in winter is the best bet.
Red-necked Grebe - This bird spent some time at Stithians Res. in early 2007. Falmouth coast is one of the best spots for this species in the country with c50 estimated to be present between the Roseland and Helford (Ref: RSPB)
Ring-necked Duck - College Reservoir has had the majority of records in recent years of this american vagrant duck. 3 have been present here in 2007 whilst in 2008 a probable returning bird stayed at Stithians Res for a while.
Storm Petrel - These birds were part of a 171 strong invasion into Falmouth Bay in June 2007. An amazing sight created by strong southerlies for a long time.
Surf Scoter - A great sighting for the Falmouth area, this american sea-duck was present in late 2006 at Swanpool.
Wood Sandpiper - This long-staying individual was present at Sthithians lake in late 2007. Stithians Res. is one of the best places in the UK to see this species migrating.
