Burning Words

by Tracie Anne, copyright 2001

There's a stench
Filling the air
This warm and sultry night...
Caught in a draft,
A pungent blaze of
Burning plastic words
Breathed upon the heart.
You touch,
As I try to pull away...
The odor, more than I can bear,
Louder than whispers,
As it perspires from your tongue.
I hear you,
Feeling your stings...
How could I not?
I love you's once forgotten,
Now reeking the mind
As the smoldering flames
Embrace,
Melting me to this place.
The crackle burning these drops
To my streaked cheeks...
An attempt to smother the flames
With my tears.
This hold...
Let go of me!
No longer can I breathe...
Poisonous fumes softly killing;
This heat, draining.
I'm not ready to die!
Praying for a quenching rain,
Wishing for release from this fire,
In pain, I fall to my knees,
Kneeling before you,
Begging
For one drop of life.
In the distance, thunder...
Lightning strikes across the grey sky.
You turn; the storm approaching.
Eyes off me, quietly, I stand.
Puddles forming on the dry ground,
Cooling this heat.
Off guard...
Pushing you into the fire,
I watch,
You devoured in this which you created.
Walking away...
My emotions, finally stablizing,
This storm, renewing my spirit,
While you...
You are left to burn
In the inferno
Of your own words.
