What It Is...

A landmark research project has begun that allows people to make a real difference in the fight against cancer. This is no regular donation request: a participant is never asked to open a check book or volunteer time.

The Intel-United Devices Cancer Research Project is asking you to volunteer your PC to help process molecular research being conducted by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research. To participate, you simply download a very small, no cost, non-invasive software program that works like a screensaver: it runs when your computer isn't being used, and processes research until you need your machine. Your computer never leaves your desk, and the project never interrupts your usual PC use.

How It Works...

Most computers aren't using all their computing power at a given time. Even when you are engaged in a game, creating graphics, surfing the web, you may only be employing a fraction of your machine's available computing power. United Devices has built a small, secure software agent for individuals to download to their machine that can save this wasted power and put it to use.

Anyone with a computer can download the UD Agent. You then register your UD Agent to get credit for the computational work your computer is doing. The UD Agent just runs quietly in the background without disturbing your usual computer usage, using the spare power that your computer isn't using. And, bit-by-bit, it performs a few of the millions of calculations required to analyze a molecule, run through an algorithm, measure a tiny temperature change. The Agent sends data back to United Devices servers to compile the various bits of data processed by the individual members.
