Casa del Mar
quiet night live
a nice private villa

June 26, 23:45 arrival in Puerto Morelos after 6 hours transfer in Houston, a nice small fisher village with a few tourist.
The Casa del Mar is a nice villa direct in front of the beach and consists of six condominiums. But if you arrive late don't forget to remind the agent about your arrival time. The cleaning staff is only present in the morning. It took us one hour to find the key for our condominium with some help from very nice neighbors.
120 square meters, a huge balcony and the pool makes you relaxed.
The low season price - 120 US$ per night - to be paid by cash only and only in US$, Japanese Yen are not so useful in Mexico and if accepted you will get a very bad exchange rate from the street dealers.

The village has 4 restaurants were you can get a dinner for 200 Peso (20 US$) for two person if you don't take the lobster.

June 27, we planned our 1st dive, but we had to cancel it due to the bad weather. So we went for sighseeing to Tulum.
June 28 & 29, beautiful weather for diving. The most relaxing diving you can do. You will be picked up and dropped off in front of the beach (30 seconds from the villa). The 2nd biggest reef in the world is right in front of you. After a 15 minutes boat ride you just start to dive and you will not loose a second of your vacation by long preparations and traveling. It costs you 60 US$ for two dives (including the rental fee if you don't have no own gear). Cozumel lover's will have a little more stress (same price).
But be aware, it's Mexico, 9 o'clock pick up time means plus 30 to 45 minutes.
It was our dive number 22 and the fist with camera. The quality of the photos should be excused. We will improve our skills.

June 27, Tulum - the only Maya city by the ocean.
In the rain
it was not so hot. Many tourists used the lower temperatue to see the sights.
Its a 130 km (1h20min) easy drive from Cancun. There is not so much traffic, the half way 4 lines and the speed limit is 110 km/h.

June 28 & 30, we viseted Playa del Carmen.
It's a lovely small city with so many small shops, restaurants and a nice night life. So far
it's not so faumous, the prices are still reasonable. For the next time we already planed to stay there a few days. The beach is clean and you have easy access to Cozumel.

waterwith mexican music July 1 & 2 - The Shock
We went to the hotel zone in Cancun to enjoy the night life, discos, beach bars and celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary on July 2.
But after our arrival we noticed that all liquor shops were closed. On July 2 the new Mexican parliament was elected. Therefore all public places could not sale any alcohol during the whole weekend in the whole country according to the law. We never found that in any guidebook.
So all restaurants and bars were empty. You could only get a beer in a few hotels.
(the hotel price 20 Peso (2 US$) per bottle, cheaper than in Japan, but for two days....)

July 1 to 5 - The Hotel Baccara
is an excellent petit hotel with only 30 rooms, which gives you a nice private atmosphere. The feeling is totally different from the other big sleeping facilities in this area. The condominiums are spacious and some are equipped with a jacuzzi on the balcony. Depending on the room size and facility you have to bear 120 ~ 270 US$ per night (this is the low season price).
During the low season the prices are almost 40% less than in the high season. But the drawback, every hotel tries to finish some renewal construction work during this time. About this noisy distribution you will not get any information in advance.
The beach - the best you can get, super white sand and clear water.

climbing up July 2 - our trip to Chichen Itza
The old Maya capital is located 200 km (2h) from Cancun. If you use the toll highway (160 Peso, 16 US$) you might not see a car for an hour. It gives you a mysterious feeling like the old city itself.
Besides, on Sundays the entrance fee is free of charge.

The Restaurants
are different than from the country side. Almost all of them are only for the tourists as well as the prices. Good places needs a reservation. You can find all types of cuisine in the hotel zone.
Ask your hotel concierge for recommendations.
Except the non alcohol dinner at the first day we were never disappointed.

Another else
We rented a 2.0l Mexican made Nissan (no photo). On the Internet the Avis weekly rate is 172 US$. Later you will find out that this rate does not include any insurance's. It comes to 236 US$ per week if you want to be on the safe side.
The fuel is quite cheap in Mexico. The price for 1 liter is 4.86 Peso or 54 Yen or 1 DM.
We drove 1050 km in one week with a total fuel price of 430 Peso. Only the road conditions of the main national roads are good. If you leave them, 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended (other roads are jungle tracks).

Safety
Around the Cancun area it is a very safe. We never got any feeling of danger. In other areas in Mexico it "could" be different.

So short our travel notes from Mexico.
If you have any questions or if you need any recommendations
please don't hesitate and send us a mail.
The next report will come in October from Nice in France.

See you soon
