Once the board was sawed, I jam-packed each half with foam. Now I had to figure out a way to cover the foam. From one of the tarps, I cut out two long strips and used them to cover the exposed surfaces. I tied rope around the length of each of the makeshift out riggers to hold the strips in place. Once that was accomplished, I attached them to the poles with rope.

I got on the canoe to test my rudimentary contraption - the alligator as my audience. Oh man! It sucked big time! The nuns, in boarding school, never prepared me for this. Much good all those Latin classes were doing me now!
The cut halves no longer had holes through which to run the poles. All the rope I could muster hadn't been enough to hold them in place. With dread and desperation, I watched as each small wave consecutively pushed the ropes and the out rigs towards the edge of the poles. To top it off, each wave would seep under the tarp, flooding and weighing down the out rigs to the point of total submersion. Unlike me, the alligator was getting optimistic. I paddled back to shore.

What to do now? For the next 15 minutes I pranced around and flailed my arms as every four-letter word in the English language and every foul word in Spanish exited my lips. Had the nuns taught us some dirty words in Latin, I would have uttered those too.

Finally, I resigned myself to my fate. I stuck my tongue out at the alligator, climbed up to the tent and started a fire. That night I had another serious talk with God.
