Background:

Born on the Draconis capital world Luthien, Tokahiro had everything a person could ask. His parents, Joshi and Miko, were well-respected citizens and lived a luxurious life. Tokahiro was their only child and was born late in their life. They already gave up hope when the child was born. They spared nothing. Joshi was a scientist working in the military industry. When Tokahiro was born, Miko left her work to stay with the child and never returned to work. Joshi made enough money so there was no need. He was responsible for energy weapon research and was good at what he did.

Young Tokahiro grew up surrounded by books, and on top of that, he spent a lot of time with his grandparents. His grandfather, Buntaro, was a soldier in his youth, and Tokahiro looked up to him. Though it came as a disappointment to his parents, Tokahiro wanted to go to military school. He signed up and thus started his military career.

He did pretty well considering his pacifist parents, and what's more important, he enjoyed his classes. Sometime during the last month a mysterious letter came. A lawyer wanted to meet with Tokahiro to settle some property issues. More than a little worried, Tokahiro barely kept his with through those last few weeks before returning home. His father arranged a meeting with Mr. Uwara and they went together. As it turned out Buntaro, had a brother and he died some months ago. He was a black sheep of the family and has spent most of his life as a mercenary. He kept an eye out on family affairs and one of his last wishes was for young Tokahiro to get his OmniMech. The only problem was that the machine was on Outreach and the shipping fee was considerable. So Joshi decided it was cheaper to pay for the Mech's housing there than to ship it to Luthien and then pay for the housing. Tokahiro agreed with his father that it was wise to wait a while before deciding what to do with it.

That summer was a blur to Tokahiro. His grades had earned him the right to attend the prestigious Sun Zhang Mechwarrior Academy. His grandfather wept when the scores came. He was so proud. His mother wept too, but for a different reason. Her son was leaving. He spent his days at military school out of home too, but this was entirely different matter. He was leaving the planet. And going to the other side of the Combine.

That summer he also met a girl named Sylvia Johannson. A daughter of a wealthy industrialist, Swen Johannson. She became enamored with Tokahiro and followed him everywhere. While she was pretty enough, Tokahiro disliked her possessiveness and evaded her at every turn. It lasted throughout the summer and Tokahiro was slowly loosing his temper. He felt relieved when he went away. He could not hurt the girl, but she was a pest. So the academy was the was the easy way out.

The days at the academy were hard. The regiment was brutal and the expectations were high. Many failed and went home, but Tokahiro did well. He did more than well. He was in the top 20 of his class and went to Officer Candidate School after the first two years. His schooling continued and he emerged as a talented Mechwarrior on the rise.

He was assigned to a unit and saw a fair share of action in his tour of duty. He survived and honed his skills even further. They attacked enemy many times and his superiors were starting to recognize his prowess. His unit was selected for joint exercises with the Clan Nova Cat forces, and that is when the trouble started.

Buntaro told the story of Luthien battle to Tokahiro many times. Tokahiro knew how Nova Cat and Smoke Jaguar forces were stopped there. The times had changed. Old enemies were now uneasy rivals, and Tokahiro was supposed to train along the Clan warriors. Though he did not like it, he masked his feeling and did his best. But, a member of Tokahiro's unit lost his mother in the attack on Luthien, and he was causing problems. But, while he sabotaged the efforts, he was never caught. Outwardly he was friendly to the Clan warriors, but accidents happened all the time. And each time it was the Nova Cat warrior that got hurt.

Miuchi Mawada did his best to cover up his tracks, but people were getting suspicious and he needed a scapegoat. Tokahiro was the man he selected. Unfortunately for Miuchi, Tokahiro stumbled across him at an inappropriate moment. He was just planting the last pieces of evidence when Tokahiro returned to his room unexpectedly. A short fight ensued and Miuchi struck his head on the door jamb. His skull was broken and he died instantly. It was a clear case of self-defense, but the investigation unearthed the evidence that linked Tokahiro to the sabotaging of the Draconis Combine/Nova Cat joint efforts. Charged for treason and murder, things did not look bright for Tokahiro. The trial was not going well for him and it was evident he was going to be sentenced to death.

And it was so. The decision was unanimous, guilty. The evidence was overwhelming and his life was over.

But, there was another force to be reckoned with: Sylvia Johannson. She cried and wept and begged her father to help. She was his only child, how could he say no. He had the funds and he knew the people. A group of mercenaries was hired and a daring raid on the prison complex was staged. Seven guards were killed and seventeen prisoners were released to hide the real target. Tokahiro was smuggled away and taken to the Johannson summer house. Sylvia awaited him there. Tokahiro's surprise was great and he was unable to speak.

Next three months he spent in that house with Sylvia. He had everything he desired. Everything but the freedom. He dared not leave the house. Then on the news he heard that he was the only one of those who escaped who was still not caught. Two days later, Swen came and told him that Miuchi's father was looking for him. Apparently he was a noble, with close ties to House Kurita. And he did not take the death of his son too well. He offered a reward for his capture and already bounty hunters were looking for him. He would be safe there, but any venture away would spell certain death.

This was true, but Tokahiro was sick from being locked away. He agreed with Swen's warning, but secretly he planned to escape. Tokahiro saw only a plot to keep him locked up. He had to escape.

It was not so hard. He left a note to Sylvia, saying that he was leaving and that he could not stand being locked in the house any more. She misunderstood the note. She saw only his unwillingness to be with her. She felt betrayed, and she hated him. Meanwhile Tokahiro hid in the city.

Tokahiro had a bit of luck. His grandfather was the first to find him. He pulled some of his brother's old contacts and they were the first to locate Tokahiro. It was no easy task, but they convinced Tokahiro to trust them and he was secreted away. His family was notified of his state and it was decided that he would be safer outside of Draconis Combine. The solution presented itself. He would go to Outreach and join some mercenary company and bide his time before his sins were forgotten. All was arranged and he packed.

But, before he could leave more bad news came. Swenn Johannson had died and his daughter Sylvia has inherited his holdings. One of his enemies now had an access to a great deal of funds. It was only a question of time before she found him. And with Miuchi's father still looking for him and his escape from his trial, he had to have eyes in the back of his head.

Note: It has been a long-standing tradition that the Ueda family become samurai. However, that tradition fell to the wayside long ago. What did remain was that all the males in the family were captured on canvas in samurai gear. The third image is a digital copy of Tokahiro's samurai portrait.
