Private Marcus Phillips Overview:
Marcus Phillips was originally born Wesley LeBlanc. The LeBlanc family was destitute, and another mouth to feed was simply too much for them. Distant relatives, by both blood and location heard about the state of affairs for the LeBlancs, and upon hearing they intended to give their next child up for adoption, they stepped in, not wanting family to go to strangers. The Phillips knew they could give him opportunities that his birth parents could not, so with that in mind, and knowing that they could not have children of their own, they visited the LeBlancs and convinced the family to give their next born to them.

At age twelve, it was pretty clear to all three of them that Marcus did not look like either of his parents. This brought about the question of "Who is my father," thinking perhaps of infidelity on the part of his mother. Rather than let him believe that either of them were unfaithful to each, they told him the truth. It amazed them that at his young age, he understood the situation, and he was not angry at his birth parents, though he did want to meet them.

The Lebancs arrived in time to see their son score five touch downs and run a kick off for a touch down in the final game of the season for his high school team, the J.M.L.S.S. Blue Devils. They never imaged how well he was doing, and that meeting justified in their own minds that they had done the right thing for Marcus. They were proud of him and grateful for their distance cousins for adopting him all those years ago.
Marcus enlisted in the local military, joining the marines. As far as his parents were concerned, the Phillips, this move came as a sudden surprise. Never once did he mention that as part of his plans.

While there, he found a knack for the rifle, able to make incredible shots. He took the opportunity to go to Armstrong as part of his paramilitary service after his parents had moved there. While he knew that they were not his birth parents, they were the parents he grew up with, and they were a close family. Marcus wanted to stay close to home, but his father's promotion took him elsewhere, so Marcus followed.

At his father's insistence, Marcus enrolled at Robinson Academy. He felt that the training there would open more doors for him. Marcus was resisting, but when his mother joined in, Marcus agreed. It was during the first break that he returned home for a short visit before returning to the academy, where he met Gwyn Knightly, a woman training at Armstrong Flight Academy. They hit it off rather well, and they spent a lot of time together when they could. They did marry, and it was then that Marcus saw the bond between his new wife and his new father-in-law. Shortly after their marriage, they both found themselves being assigned to the Deep Blue Sea. In Marcus' case, however, he was on a back-up list. Two soldiers came down with serious illnesses that took them out of active duty, and that openned the way for Marcus to be assigned to the ship, without Gwyn's knowledge.
