Hauptmann | Doctor Rachel Dehaven | Overview: |
![]() |
The Dehaven family is a medical family, almost every family member directly linked to the Dehaven name has been in a high level of medicine. Rachel was no exception, but she did stray from the norm and joined the military. However, well before Rachel went to prep school, her younger sister, Naomi Dehaven, made it clear that she would be after all the best parts of the Dehaven name, including the fortune associated with it.
Rachel never did take her words seriously, but the countless attempts to make her look foolish and irresponsible made her think twice. While it never mattered to Rachel while she was young, Naomi nearly hurt Rachel in one of her attempts. This made Rachel more careful. The move to Rose McMillian's School for Girls was the best thing for her, since she could concentrate on her studies without the distraction of a younger sister who was out to get her. Rachel's ability to devote herself to the books full time paid off, as she was an outstanding student, making the honour roll. Naomi did not take the news well, especially since that moved Rachel back to the status of "Mommy and Daddy's little girl." This was a turning point for Naomi, and she saw no way to obtain her goals with Rachel being the "God send" that she was, in her parents view. Naomi turned to drugs and petty crimes as a way to garner attention, though it was not the kind she had expected. William Dehaven was determined to alter Naomi's behaviour, and he was not spare anything any longer. Rachel turned to the military for the next direction in her life. The Bolan Academy was relatively new, but it would set her on the right direction as far as Rachel was concerned. Under the tender mercies of an Ex-Lyran |
| Commonwealth soldier who fought the Dragon in the fourth Succession War, Rachel benefited greatly from him, and furthered her resolve to become a military doctor. However, she did not want to limit herself, so she made sure that she had many research skills under her belt by the time she graduated. Rachel could not count on her father staying out of her life, and influencing the LAAF into posting her to a safe posting somewhere.
To her pleasure and surprise, her father, with a lot of influence from her mother, stayed out of Rachel's affairs and let her take the course she wanted. However, that did not stop someone from posting her to Tharkad Medical Center. It was tough for her, she wanted so much more than that. Determination being a very strong trait in the Dehaven family, she ended up having to dig up some dirt on the man responsible for posting her to Tharkad. In order to avoid a sexual harassment suit, he gave in and sent her packing, assigning Rachel to Coventry. Rachel toured all over Coventry, learned a lot and shared much of her knowledge while she was there. Again, it was not much of challenge, until a raid by League forces attempted to capture a BattleMech prototype. The battle was furious, and even Rachel had to take arms against the intruders. Though she was not trained as any kind of force commander, she remembered the stories her old drill instructor used to tell her. She hoped he was not full of hot air, and used pretty much everything he had mentioned to her, though not so sensationalized. Turned out that the old man knew a little something after all, as she was promoted to officer status. Rachel was not comfortable with the move, but someone told her that she was fantastic on the field, and she deserved the promotion, and that she really could handle herself, if she wanted proof, just remember what happened on Coventry. Rachel was given the opportunity to see the other side of the Federated Commonwealth, and see took it. It was not a chance to get away from her family, more specifically, Naomi, but it was a chance to see if what people said about the Davion side of space was as bad as they said it was. A near disastrous flight in St. Ives space almost did it, but when the so called "Accident" turned out to be a case of "Friendly Fire," she wondered if the union was a good thing or not, and she questioned her loyalty to the Stiener thrown. Rachel did request to be placed on a warship, again, more for the different experience than anything else. She did not expect to be assigned to any, never mind to the first ship in a new class of destroyer. |
