This interview took place in person with Alex from Say Anything. |

Caity: So who has been your biggest influence both in the beginning of Say Anything and now?
Alex: As in when I first joined Say Anything, who influenced me then and whos influencing me now? Alex: Okay. When I first joined Say Anything I was going through a Nirvana phase. I was being really influenced by Nirvana and the Foo Fighters. Those are two bands that I was really into then. Now-a-days Ive been listening to a lot of Pedro The Lion, a lot of instrumental music, things of that nature. Caity: Where did the idea for the Alive With The Glory of Love video come from? Alex: We were in the van one day on tour, quite a while ago, about a year and a half ago, and we were watching this goofy movie called Hot American Summer. Then we were trying to think of video ideas and then we thought of a way to metaphorically, do it like a love story and have a childrens summer camp, which is what Hot American Summer is about. That was around the time that I think we had that idea. Caity: Do you ever have people tell you that being featured on MTV or on the radio is a somewhat negative thing because youre selling out? Alex: A lot less often than youd think. It doesnt really happen that often at all. I thought that it would, but it doesnt really happen often at all. Everyone is more excited. Caity: So the show tonight, how do you guys like Rhode Island? Have you ever been here before? Alex: I have. I do like it. I dont know very much about it, but it seems pretty cool. The Newbury Comics at the mall is pretty cool. Seems like a small place. Cops wear funny hats. Caity: If you could play a show with any band, who would it be and why? Alex: Most likely, Nirvana. You cant play a show with them because Kurt Cobain is not alive, but I am very inspired by him and I would love to play a concert with him and Dave Grohl at the same time. Caity: Do you get a lot of hometown support? Alex: The band is from L.A. Im personally from San Diego, but we do get a lot of hometown support. Los Angeles has been supporting us for quite some time. Caity: How does it feel being featured on the show tonight, being sold out and what not? Alex: Feels great. Its cool. Its nice to play a good show for a radio station that has been helping us out. It feels good. Caity: Where do your song titles come from? Alex: I dont know, I dont name them. Caity: So your current band member Parker Case was formerly in Jamison Parker, I was wondering, were you a fan of theirs previous to him joining the band? Alex: I didnt listen to them, no personally. Caity: Do you know how he joined the band? Alex: Yeah, our current manager used to manage Jamison Parker before they broke up. We were looking for a sixth member, and then he was like, Hey Parker can do the stuff that you want him to do, Do you want him to join the band? Caity: Do you know what will be the next song released from Is a real boy? Jake On the radio and stuff? Caity: Yeah, like the radio, music video. Alex: Most likely, Wow I Can Get Sexual Too., but its up in the air. Caity: Is there a song on the album that means a lot to you, that sticks out from the rest? Alex: Me personally, yeah. Its called Orgy of Critics. Its very, kind of angry, kind of fast, really gets me adrenaline pumping because I like that a lot. Caity: What are you guys doing after the show, anything good? Alex: I dont know. I dont really feel that well. (laughs) Caity: Speaking of which, your song Wow I Can Get Sexual Too is amusing and I just wanted to know, where did you get the idea for the song? Alex: I didnt write the song, Max did, so I dont know where he got the idea from. Probably from the idea of just phone sex, cyber sex, things of that nature. Caity: I dont know if you can answer this one, but the song Every Man Has A Molly , do you know if thats a true story or not? Alex: Yes and no. Caity: Can you add to that? Alex: I cant because I didnt write it, again. I just know that it has true parts. Caity: Oh, okay. So its half and half? Alex: Yeah. Caity: Are there any big tours coming up for you guys? Alex: No were recording next. Were not touring. This is just our last four or five shows that were playing for a little while. Caity: Are there any bands out there right now that you think people should be aware of? Alex: Yes. The bands that opened on this tour. Days Away, Brazil, theyre all really good bands that people should be aware of, and Piebald also has a new album coming out in the beginning of next year. Also, theyre good. Caity: The last question is, how is touring in another country as opposed to the U.S.? Alex: Its really different. Its really crazy. Just like, being in a different culture, having to possibly speak a different language, or get accustomed to the money. All these things which you have to do in your every day life. Sometimes the fans are a little crazier, but we do have crazy fans. Its hard to really gauge that. Its really fun though. Its experiencing the world. |
