LMYE Promotions - It Dies Today interview
This interview took place in person with Nick Brooks of
It Dies Today.

Caity: How has your sound changed throughout the process of making and releasing, The Caitiff Choir and then making and releasing Sirens?

Nick: It got a lot better. I dont know, we stopped writing stupid songs I think, and instead of worrying about what other people want to hear and whatever else, we kind of just wrote what we wanted to hear. And instead of just throwing in breakdowns and stuff randomly we just thought about what would be best for the songs as a whole.

Caity: What is your favorite song on the album and why?

Nick: Probably Turn Loose The Doves. I dont know, I like them all really, but maybe that one. I like the lyrics in it, [theyre] probably my favorite on the album thats why.

Caity: Do you have a favorite band that youve toured with?

Nick: This tours been pretty awesome. This is probably my top, one of my top tours as far as bands go. All the bands have been really, really cool. Every Time I Dies always fun to go out with. Machine Head was really nice. I dont know, I cant really think. Thats pretty much it.

Caity: Why make your first video for Sacred Heart?

Nick: The label wanted to. So, thats the song the label picked pretty much.

Caity: As far as your lyrics go, I was wondering if there is any true meaning behind them or if its just like Alright that sounds good, lets use it?

Nick: Um, theres always meaning. Unless Im just like drunk and writing something, then theres generally meaning behind everything I write. Like to me, other people probably come up with different meanings for everything that Ive written but, to me theres definitely specific things.

Caity: What about best and worst tour experiences? Do you have anything youd like to share?

Nick: Best tour experience, this whole tours been awesome. I dont know probably Vegas. This tour was probably my top tour moment ever, one of them, because of him (referring to the bands drummer Nick Mirusso). Yeah, we dont talk about it too much. He came off our bus in a pink cowboy hat, sunglasses, and socks. That was it. Oh and a blazer, and started running around Vegas like that, so that was fun. Worst was probably when we got everything we owned stolen from us. That sucked asshole, and then drove 55 hours from San Bernardino, California to here for Metal Fest. I hated my life at that point.

Caity: So hows Trustkill, and how was Life Sentence?

Nick: Life Sentence was whatever. It was whatever. They put out our E.P. [so] that was cool. Trustkill, theyre really neat. (Nick whispers) I fucking hate Trustkill. Shhh. (then says) No Im just kidding. Theyre good. They put out our records. Thats all I got to say.

Caity: So whats next for you guys?

Nick: I have no idea to be honest. Im sorry my answers suck for this interview. We dont even know what were doing. Were going home for December and then maybe going to Europe and Japan, and coming back and touring here. That is the tentative plan.

Caity: Are you guys looking forward to the show tonight?

Nick: Yes. I love Worcester. Worcester. (pronounced WOOHSTAH like a true Bostonian) I love it here.

Caity: So what about favorite Venues/Cities?

Nick: Pretty much all of the House Of Blues I like. The best venue ever is the Norva in Norfolk, Virginia, and the kids there are insane too so I love that venue and city. I love the Palladium. Pops in Saint Louis. Thats a good one. Its surrounded by strip clubs, and a truck stop with a full liquor store.

Chris: And the bars open 24/7.

Nick: Yeah.

Caity: So wheres the next stop and are you looking forward to it as well?

Nick: Yes I am because its the last show. Tomorrow is in Albany and then I go home. Im pretty happy about that. Im going to miss the tour a lot, but Id like to go home.

Caity: So what kind of shit do you do before/after a show?

Nick: Before a show I drink, and I lay around and do nothing, try and sleep pretty much. Then after a show I drink, or I dont and then I have fun. I have good times. I have good wholesome Christian fun.

Caity: Alright. Thats hard to believe but uh

Nick: Thats cause its complete fabrication.

Caity: So Ive heard that some IDT fans are disappointed because on the new album you sing more as opposed to screaming more on the last record, what do you have to say to that? Anything?

Nick: Different strokes for different folks. I wrote the record because I like it. Not because I wanted to please people so. And thats more punk rock than anything so whatever.

Caity: Whats going to be the next song released from Sirens?

Nick: I have no idea. It could be Sixth of June. I dont know. Either that or maybe well do a video for Reignite the Fires, or A Constant Reminder, some shit like that. I dont even know.

Caity: So I realize that this band started when some of you guys were in your mid-teens-did you parents support you or see it as just a waste of time?

Nick: Yeah my moms been really cool about it. Im broke as shit and probably shouldnt be doing this anymore, but shes been really supportive in whatever I do. Shes always been really cool. Yeah shes always been really great to me.

Caity: Did you guys do anything special last night for Thanksgiving?

Nick: Well he went home for Thanksgiving. (referring to bass player Steve Lemke) The rest of us we stayed in our hotel out here and then we went to some restaurant/bar thing, and ate there. Then drank a lot of liquor. It was fun.

Caity: Hows the bus as opposed to a van?

Nick: They both have their drawbacks. We got kicked out of our bus, so were back in a van right now. Buses are cool I guess, for certain things, but you dont get to shower a lot, and thats gross. Vans-you got to drive and its cramped, but you get hotels every night. I like that.

Caity: If there was one significant message that you wanted to get out to your fans what would it be?

Nick: Stay in school and get a real job. I have no idea. I dont really have any specific message to give to anybody. Stay in school.

Chris: Rock and Roll.

Nick: No this is my message, excuse me. I completely forgot. Bring the fucking party. Thats what it is.

Caity: This ones kind of odd. I was reading another interview with you guys.

Nick: Is it about gay stuff?

Caity: Somewhat, Yes. Something called Jerk Off Olympics. You guys want to make a comment on that, hows that going for you?

Nick: We actually havent had a contest in a while. We uh, you know, we do alright, we do alright. But we havent had any Jerk Off Olympics in a while. You know what though? If you go talk to our merch guy hes the only person ever in a Jerk Off Olympics to not only get the gold medal, but the silver as well. Finished twice.

Caity: Thats intense.

Nick: Thats impressive.

Caity: (looks at Nikki) Think you can beat that?

Caity: The last question we have is, how is the success of the new record as opposed to the last one?

Nick: Is the new record doing well? (laughs) Im just kidding. Its going. I dont know. I stopped paying attention to it, like the sales or whatever. It seems to be doing pretty well. People seem to be happy. The last record did pretty good. It was our first record so we didnt sell a bunch of records in the first week, but it did pretty good. Im happy either way. Im on tour.

Caity: Alright.

Nick: Thank you.
