Ghost Riders

She stands alone so proudly.
Her sharp eyes scanning the Plains.
Once her heart beat loudly,
Like a dome, pounded by rain.

Her mind retained an image,
He rode tall toward the sun.
Memories you just can't assuage,
The journey had now begun.

Dark and icy touch of fear,
Closed its hand around her heart.
His promise to her was clear,
They never would be apart.

The scroll she held so tightly,
Tells the tale of his demise.
She read it almost nightly,
As fresh tears filled her sad eyes.

She waits for ghostly plainsmen,
Patrolling the land by night.
The city of dust claimed them,
When their bodies lost the fight.

He pauses as he sees her,
Tonight brings their forever,
Succumbing to a fever,
They ride away together.

Love united them, living,
Now it unites them in death.
True love is for the giving,
Right until the final breath.
