Wet Cleaning Your Porcelein
by Mab

Being New To Doll Making, this is what I have learned so far about Wet Cleaning your porcelain . First off I soft fire my pieces using  cone 019. I was told it is easier cleaning then to soft fire at cone 018. I fire my items for 2 hours on low and  then I turn the heat up to Medium until it shuts off by itself. Now this works for my Kiln. After the items have cooled off completely I put some distilled water into a little rubbermaid bowl or box. I only fill it up about 1/4 full. This is because when you are done cleaning your item, you can not throw this water down your drain. It will have porcelein residue in it and it could plug up your plumbing. You can dump the water in a plastic garbage bag to dispose, or what I do is have an empty coffee can and I just pour it in there and dispose when its full into the garbage... Now to wet clean, place your items into the water and let them soak for 5 minutes. Don't put to many in together at one time as it can cause them to hit against each other and can break all your hard work you have done so far. Make sure you have good lighting.  You will need a wet scrubber which can be purchased from Seeley if you dont already have one. The link for Seeley is on our links page... The wet scrubber comes in a nice size piece and you dont need to use it that size. So cut the wet scrubber into four pieces .... This is now about the right size for you to handle.. The Wet Scrubber has two different sides.. One is smooth and one is rough.. Save the smooth side to polish up your finished Porcelain.. For wet cleaning use the rough side.. Now dip the soft scrubber into the water and take one of your soft fired pieces that you have soaked, and gently rub and smooth off any seams... Becare not to rub to hard as you can easliy rub off a nose or a detail that is needed on your finished item... After I have smoothed off the seams, I take an old nylon stocking or piece of very soft fabric, even a baby diaper, and I wet it and smooth out my item I am cleaning . Also be careful here not to break your piece you are working on....I then set the cleaned piece aside and let it dry a bit and look at it again.. Sometimes when its wet it will look like you got all the seams but when it dries a bit you can see where you may have missed a spot or two.. I them wet the item and the scrubber again and do the final touches... Now you let it sit out and dry completly before going into your next stage of firing. Never fire anything that it Wet!
