Today fairies belong to the world of childhood and are one of the delights of growing up.
Today children usually thinks of a fairy as a tiny creature in the form of a woman. She has transparent wings and long golden hair, and may carry a magic wand. Her body is airy and almost transparents. She lives in Fairyland, where the sun always shines and where dancing and singing are the main occupations. Fairyland is ruled by a queen, usually named Mab. life there is sometimes upset by the activities of bad fairies. But the good fairies, especially those who are fairy godmothers for human children, always triumph.
This idea of fairies is a fairly reccent one. In the past, fairies have taken many different forms-som of them quite ugly-and have been male as well as female.
