| Mom -- who read and bought me many books, grounded me from reading many times, and shares a love of stories with me. Mrs. Hogan - 2nd grade -- who read fiction aloud in class, gave me the chance to read it aloud in class (once), and gave me a copy of 101 Dalmations. Mrs. Lathrop - 3rd grade -- who gathered the entire class around me and took a picture of me reading the above-mentioned book "behind my desk" -- totally oblivious to the rest of the world, and to whatever else she was trying to teach! She also read... Mr. Martin - 6th grade -- who introduced me to Milo, Tom Sawyer, and The Little Prince. Monrovia Library, which I still visit frequently, find lots of new and old (to me) to read in, have payed many late fines to, and whose summer children's reading program made me search out science-fiction for the first time. Madeline L'Engle, the first author I called "one of my favorites" and whose Time cycle remains most beloved, whose ideas remain in my philosophy, and whose quotes still intrigue me. C. S. Lewis, whose clear thinking and images are embedded in my thoughts. Tolkien, whose mythology claimed me long before those movies came out. And in passing, to Peter Jackson and Co., who uncovered more "beauties that pierce like swords or burn like cold iron" than I knew existed in his epic. Mr. Stewart, High School -- who read fiction in class, after a long hiatus from teachers of that sort. Mrs. Bicknell, High School American Lit -- who made As I lay Dying somewhat comprehensible, and put humor into all discussions of "serious" works. ........... |
