The Yard That Needs the Most                       Improvement

If your yard looks more like something out of a Stephen King novel than a picture-perfect patch of grass, a new contest may help give you that incentive to turn that monstrosity from something unspeakable into something to talk about.

The Ugliest Yard Contest, sponsored by Tim Calhoun, will run until
August 31 2004. During that time, homeowners across the Eastside are invited to submit a photo of their own yard, which they deem to be a yard that needs improvement at
[email protected]. In addition to winning the convented title of the yard that needs the most improvement, the winner will receive-and agree to keep in their yard a lawn good-luck gnome, until the next year. This good-luck gnome will keep an "eye on the yard" to ensure that it does not fall into disrepair yet again.

The winner of the Yard That Needs the Most Improvement-that is, owner of the most undesirable yard on the Eastside -will receive tips from all over on how to improve their yard. It doesn't even have to be your yard. Feel free to nominate neighbors, friends and family members-all in the name of neighborhood beautification.

We are proud to expand awareness of lawn care in a fun and unique way by sponsoring the Yard That Needs the Most Improvement Contest. Our hope is the public will learn that a yard can go from neighborhood zero to neighborhood hero with a little creativity and hard work-or even in some cases, just a little TLC. Any businesses that would like to donate anything to the winner, like lawn ornaments or home improvement gift certificates would be greatly appreciated.

Most homeowners pride themselves on keeping well-manicured yards with lush grass and attractive landscaping. But these efforts are often rendered futile by less-attentive neighbors with brown, balding lawns, a rusty "fixer-upper" on blocks, gaudy flamingos or wilted plants in painted tire-pots.
You can submit an entry by mailing Tim Calhoun 2140 Capitol Ave. Des Moines, IA 50317 Phone 243-7797 or by going online & uploading a digital photo of a neighbor's yard to
[email protected]. And if pride is not an issue, you can even nominate your own ugly yard. Winning photo and even the losers will be available after contest at
