| The sky blows through the darkening sky, freezing you to the core. Clouds roll quickly in, threatening rain to begin to fall not too long from now. The sun hides behind the boiling clouds, afraid to be drenched by the water that will surely fall from the sky's crying eyes. A sudden gust of cold wind carrying the first drops of moisture blasts heavily upon you, flipping your coat back and exposing you to the cold air. You quickly pull your coat close against the wet weather. Thoughts of warm shelters and a roaring fire race quickly through your mind. Looking around you see no signs of a possible shelter. You are in a barren plains, no mountains gracing the horizons, no trees coloring the brown ground, not even a dark smudge where a hole might be resting. You curse yourself for even thinking of following the riverbed and in turn exploring this plain, especially without a horse or even without a glance to the darkening sky above. You begin to walk back north, the quickest way back to the small village you call your home. These storms were not out of the ordinary in this wet plain. These storms could get colder and harsher, and the best thing to do would be to return home and crawl under the sheets of your bed. Thoughts of warm food were quickly dashed as you find yourself on a ledge of a large hole filled with dark clear water. Before you realize you had stumbled to the edge, your balance begins to go. You try desperately to turn and balance you weight back upon the solid ground, but the dirt beneath your feet gives way. You tumble down into the dark depths of the water, your arms flailing, desperately trying to grasp the side of the wide, steep hole. Your breath is knocked out as you fall into the water backside first. You gasp for the now dissappearing air, vainly trying to gather a breath before your head submerges. But, alas, you only suck up water. You begin to sink in the dark water, trying to swim towards the now gone surface. Your heavy clothes and boots sink you down, preventing you from making any headway in the murky water. You let out a silent scream which is unheard through the water around you. Soon you no longer see the surface above, it gone from your darkening vision. Breathing becomes harder, making your mind panic. A dark shape comes towards you. You try swimming away, but in your weakened position, you are unable. The shape grasps you around your waist and pulls you away, towards unknown depths and unsearched areas. But, soon, you see a small light gleaming through the water ahead. The light begins to grow promising something. Air... You find yourself gasping for the air that is now surrounding you. You lungs pull in as much air as they can hold, the hard effort making you cough. The shape still holds you and begins to pull you towards the shore at the edge of the water. Looking closer you realize that the person is a woman, and you relax, glad that the shape meant no harm. She pulls you onto the shore, letting you catch your breath. You look around the small cavern that you now find yourself in. The water covers half of the area, lapping gently on the small shore. On one wall shelves had been carved into the soft stone, providing shelves and compartents for items scattered within. Not too far from you is a small fire, the origin of the light you had seen before. You quickly scramble over to the warm fire, putting your hands out for the welcoming heat. The woman moves about behind you, shaking pots and pans. When the reckless sounds cease, she makes her way over to you. She thrusts a warm cup filled with a sweet tea into your hands and orders you to drink. The woman sits across the fire from you, and for the first time you see her close up. Her skin is a light blue, the same color blue as the ocean on a warm summer day. Small, intricate patterns decorate her arms and legs, like small waves which lap upon the shore. She watches your eyes running upon her skin and the small waves coursing up and down on her arms. "I am a water elf if you would like to know. Anyways, welcome to my home," she says as she gestures to the cave around. "My name is Mein." She sips at the tea in her hand as she gazes into the fire. "Uhm..." you wait until her dark blue eyes turn to you. "Where is this cavern? I never knew there was even a source of water in the middle of the plains." "Ok, i'll explain both of those. This is just a branch off of a warren of underground tunnels. These tunnels start at the sea which you most suredly know of," she waits for you to nod before continuing, "Well, the water from the sea fills the tunnels, and occasionly, caverns like this one are unfilled. I am a water elf, and thus I love being next to water at all times, so I made this cavern my home. Recently a part of a connecting tunnel's roof broke open, revealing the underwater passageways to the plains. This is where you fell in. You may stay her until the storm passes." |
