Stumbling over rocks and roots upon the old path, Mahou curse herself for deciding to make this journey. The day was ending and the first stars could be seen shining brightly against the black sky. The trail, being made anew by her footsteps, had been created by unknown people so far long ago. The trail had begun to deteriorate from the lack of use, and it led to the base of a tall mountain gracing the horizon so close yet so far away. She saw a rock looming out of the shadows created by a nearby tree, and taking it as a sign, she made her way towards the stone. Her legs were aching from all the walking, and her shoulders feeling the weight of her knapsack, so she decided to sit down upon the rock and rest. The land around seemed dark and uninhabitable, but that fact may be because few live on this stretch of land. Her own home overlooked the mountain in the distance and everytime she saw the tall creation soaring into the clouds, a strange feeling passed about her. She could not explain this feeling, but the desire to explore this strange mountain compelled her to leave her home and embark upon the journey of her own creation.

She sighed and thought about her departion from the village. She would not be missed by many who resided in the village. Her parents had died when she was very young and she had been left in the care of the village healer. The healer, a cranky old lady, lived on the outskirts of town where few came. Thus, she was not known well, and her childhood was gone quickly without many friends. She but only one hobby, and that was the art of healing. The healer had taught her well and she was glad for this. She shook herself out of her little reverie, wishing she coul forget the past at this moment. Usually when she remembered her past, she would begin to feel sorry for herself, and tha would just not do at the present moment.

The wind rustled through the leaves above her, breaking the silence of the night. The air foretold of coming rains and colder nights. She pulled her robe tighter around her to protect herself from the bitter wind that began to blow from the north. She looked towards the mountain once again, glad that she would soon stand before it. The night seemed only to become darker and soon she would only be able to see the brightly burning stars in the night sky. Only a sliver of the moon raced with the stars tonight, providing very little light to the starry night sky. It seemed the moon had given up it's constant quest ti outshine the stars this night, making the darkness complete.

The darkness would only grow darker, bleaker as time wore on, she realized. She decided to walk as far as she could in this darkness and maybe find a warmer place to spend the night in. She shouldered her knapsack once again and stepped onto the path. She could faintly see the ground below her and she found herself a bit disoriented. She looked towards the mountain again. Nothing stood around the mountain, isolating the formation in a sea of wheat. If she kept her eyes upon that mountain, she would not lose her way. So once again the mountain was her guide in her life's journey, both with paths that were dark and strange.

She had journeyed for what she felt was an hour, time was hard to tell, when she decided to stop. She found a tree with roots twisting above the ground among dead leaves left by living plants. She nestled between the tree's roots and pulled her robe tightly around herself. Curled into a ball and using her knapsack as a pillow, she was able to fall asleep without any problem. She slept deeply, gathering lost strength while peace reigned control within her mind. But her peace was shortlived. Terra was jolted awake by a sound, light and high-pitched, one that could be heard through anything. She sat blinking around in the blinding darkness, searching for the source of that strange, foreign sound.

Mahou was now standing up casting her eyes around, looking for the unknown source. The stars shone still and the only change that seemed to have taken place was the departure of the moon. The sound became clearer, more definite, and closer. Her eyes still could not see around her through the dark so she focused all of her energy to the sound. Yes, the sound could only be described as giggling. That was the only sound she could put her finger on. But giggling? Were her ears playing jokes upon her tired conciousness? She walked towards the sound, afraid and determined. Who knew what this strange sound was, but she was determined to find out what exactly woke her up from her peaceful slumber. She had only taken a few steps when the sound intensified. The giggling, if it was truly giggling, became higher pitched and faster. She stopped, unsure of what she should do now.

"Ooooh, by the senjo spirit, humans are sooo funny!!!" The words were formed eloguently, light and lilting, and had the same tone and composition as the soiund that had been giggling before. Now she knew that the voice belonged to some human out there, but she doubted that thought. 'humans are sooo funny!'? Who would say that?

"Who is out there? Introduce yourself!" Mahou yelled out into the night towards the origin of the unknown voice. The giggling subsided and the night was quiet once again except for the chirping of crickets every now and then. She could not sense any kind of presence near or around her, and she suddenly felt vulnerable. She had thought the speaker of the voice had disappeared into the darkness once more. But, soon a small light appeared, shining not too far away from her to her right. She did not move, unsure what this strange light meant or what it portended to. The light, pure white and cutting away the darkness around it, bobbed up and down and because of this irregular motion, she could not focus well enough on the person. The light moved towards her with surprising speed and she took a step back.

The light flared up suddenly, illuminating the being that held the light. The person who held the light was not human. A fairy held the light in the palm of her hand. And the light was like a burning white fire hovering over the palm of her hand. The light went where her hand went, so she knew the fairy  was in control of what could only be magic. The last time she had heard about fairies, she had been little and the old lady had told her about the strang creatures. The healer had believed in them, but the society around her did not. Mahou had thought them only legend and the ramblings of the old, but now! The proof hovered before her, smiling, and giving light to the darkness.

"Hello human, my name is Taizanmeidou," Mahou blinked at the strange name, one foriegn to her tongue. The fairy laughed at the look upon her face and Mahou tried to hide her anger and embarresment behind a mask of forced calm. "Well, you may call me Taiz, I think that will be much easier for you," Taiz said once her giggling subsided.

"What do you want with me," Mahou asked the fairy, still unsure if she could trust this fairy. Fairies were known for their mischief, so she was told, and so she naturally doubte this little creature.

"Well, I was curious as to why you are out here in the middle of the Senjo Field. The only creatures live here are fairies, and not many of those anyway. We rarely get any visitors, we are not exactly sure why. So, naturally, I grew curious when a human entered our land," Taiz said quickly with somehow not losing her breath. She had an idea why no one came to this land. Rumors of mysterious happenings came from this land. People who say that the talk of such weird events were untrue, yet they stayed away from the land. They did not know if the stories were true or not, but they did not wish to find out themselves. Her gaurdian had always said they were the result of some drunken man. Anyways, Mahou told the fairy all of this and the fairy nodded her head in agreement. "Yes, that would explain it. But, still, you came. I am curious as to why?"

"Well..." Mahou explained her reasons for exploring the mountain in the far distance. Taiz listened attentively. "I see," Taiz began, "That is a strange mountain indeed. My people sense magic enmanating from there, but we can not master it's like. It is said the ruins of an ancient temple, something like that, is situated near the top." Mahou's desire to reach the mountain grew. Magic and an ancient civialization. What more did an adventure need? She could not wait to reach the mountain and explore the many wonders that the moutain hid from the outside world. Taiz's eyes brightened. "I know, I shall go with you!"

"What?!?" Mahou asked of the fairy. Her face became full of outrage. Why would a fairy want to go with her? Why would a fairy be interested her in affairs?

"Yep! That's right!! I have never been to the mountain. I want to know what is there also. So, your stuck with me if you like it or not," and with those last words, Taiz stuck her tongue out at Mahou as if to drive home her point. Mahou sighed and put her hand to her forehead wondering why she always had the worst of luck. This fairy was strange, she knew not what to think of her yet, and so infuriating! She would just have to get used to the whole thing though, she knew that the fairy would keep her word.

"Well, I need to get back to sleep, or I shall truly suffer in tommorow's walk," Mahou informed the fairy. Taiz nodded and not soon after the little flame floating above her palm dissapeared. Complete darkness took over the night once again and Mahou was competely disoriented. "Hey! What did you put out your light," Mahou demanded of the small being. The light flared back up once again and the fairy looked at Mahou with a look of puzzelment.

"Well, do you humans not like to sleep in the dark," Taiz asked innocently. Mahou sighed, maybe the fairy truly was trying to help but she doubted that seriously.

"Well, how am I to find a place to sleep without some form of light?"

"Why don't you make your own light with your own magic?" Mahou stared blankly at the little fairy as she said this. Taiz's face, full of confusion, stared back. But soon her face turned to compassion as something dawned on her. Mahou did not know what this was and wondered at the fairy's quick change of emotions. "Very well, I shall leave keep my light burning until you lay down," Taiz finished and floated towards Mahou. Taiz sat down upon Mahou's shoulder and with the light, Mahou was able to find her way back to the tree where she had fallen asleep not too long ago. She laid down between the upon the ground between the uplifting roots and pulled her robe tightly around her. Taiz flitted off a bit and nestled upon a branch far above the ground.

Taiz said goodnight and let her light dissipate into the dark night. The blackness was darker than when she closed her eyes, making her shudder. She had never experienced such a lonely or eventful night ever before in her sixteen years. Even though she wished to forget all that had happened, she strengthened her resolve. She would not allow her feelings to get in the way of her quest, no matter how much they affected her. But she felt her small provincial world shattering before her eyes, and even if she wished, she would not be able to collect every peice. She could not go back to the way things were.

Sleep began to dull her thoughts and soon she found herself on the verge of sleep. Exhaustion wore down on her and the sleep that her body ached seemed overpowering. Just as sleep forced her eyes to shut, she remembered what Taiz had said earlier. "...with your own magic." She wished to know what that meant, but before she could explore the thought further, she fell asleep and journeyed into the world of dreams.

The sun bright in the morning sky cast it's warm rays upon Mahou's face. She woke gradually, forgetting all her problems in the peace of the new day. She lay there, tempting to stay there all day, but as she opened her eyes, the moutain glared balefully at her. She needed to finish what she had started or her mind would never be at peace.

She stretched her arms and stood up to greet the day. The air seemed to vibrate light. The sun shone with all it's might in the cloudless sky. It seemed surprising that such a bright, shining day could be born from such a dark, lonely night. She smiled and looked towards the horizon, feeling happier now than she had in days.

"You are finally up! You sure are lazy! Are all humans as lazy as you?" Mahou turned around and confronted Taiz who sat on one of the tree's branches just out of Mahou's grasp. Taiz laughed at the infuriated look upon Mahou's face. Mahou had apparently forgotten the small creature, probably because the little sprite annoyed her. The fairy had fun doing this which made her angry. She kept silent though and tried to ignore Taiz, but could not.

"Come on, we should get going," she said quietly to the giggling fairy. Mahou shouldered her pack and found the small trail heading towards the mountain in the distance. Taiz followed silently humming to herself a small catchy tune that floated upon the gentle blowing wind. No clouds were in sight, but Mahou got the feeling of a coming storm. Only a feeling and nothing more. The immediate landscape about her had remained the same overnight, the fields of wheat still stretching out as far as the eye could see, the blue sky unmarred, and the warm sun shining down to chase away the darkness and shine light into the hearts of all. Smells of dirt filled her nostrils, reminding her once again how this area, so far away from any towns or villages, was different from the place she grew up. All seemed right within the world.

Mahou remembered once again what Taiz had said last night. She turned to Taiz who flew at her side, oblivious to the world outside her own. Such happy innocence, thought Mahou. "Uhm, Taiz?" Taiz stopped in her merry reverie and turned to Mahou. Taiz's eyes seemed to be those of an elder, even though she acted and looked young. She seemed to bounce in the air with happiness that Mahou envied. Mahou began, "Last night you said 'your own magic' when you were talking about the light you held. What did you mean by that?"

Taiz grew serious, unusual for a fairy like herself. "Don't you know about your own powers?"

"What powers?" Mahou was confused and did not know what to think. She had always considered herself normal and now she knew not what to think. Her having powers? That seemed just as ludicrous as a pig flying.

"Yes. I sense within you a strong power. A strong magical power. If you honed it, you would become a very strong sorceress. I can not believe that you did not know before. Most people, no matter their race or kindred, find out their own talents when they reach the age of sixteen." Taiz informed. Her face still serious and no merriment touching her eyes.

"I have had no hint as to what you call this power that is inside me," Mahou felt lost and stared at the ground.

"Do not worry! It is only a matter of time before your powers mature!" said the fairy, seriousness leaving and happiness taking it's rightful place. Taiz came over and patted Mahou's shoulder with her tiny hand, somehow comforting Mahou. So, she had the power to use magic and she had never known this. Her powers lay dormant and she would have never known if Taiz had never told her. She turned to the fairy and smiled, glad that someone was there to help her through this time.

Taiz's face brightened if that was possible. "Why don't I give you the basics of magic?" Mahou nodded her head. "Well, there are two major areas of magic, white and black. I, myself, practice white. And within those are the four elements..." Taiz talked about magic and it's uses long into the day. Mahou listened intently, soaking up every detail that she possibly could. Time passed quickly without her realizing it, and her happy mood lasted.

Eventually, at about noon, Taiz decided to try and teach Mahou the simple light spell that she had seen her use. Mahou was able to pick it up after many hours of practice. Taiz had said that this simple spell could be mastered even by people with dormant powers since it used very little magic. But the ability to use higher, stronger spells would take time. Mahou, looking at the white flame dancing above her palm, felt that she had solved one small puzzle in her life. Even though all she could use her magic for was a simple light spell, she felt proud of herself and felt that she could take on almost anything.

Mahou found herself standing before the tall mountain. She had listened so raptly to Taiz's words that she had not noticed they were so close to the mountain. It was midafternoon and the sun graced the horizon with colors of red and orange. Mahou tried to look at the peak of the mountain, but straining her head as far back as she could, she still could not see. Fog wrapped snaked around the mountain, adding an mysterious air to it. Mahou wondered why they could not see the fog from far away, but she decided not to worry about it. She looked around for any easily accessible way to the upper part of the mountain. She did find one that snaked around the mountain, avoiding major cliffs or rocks.

Taiz stopped her humming as Mahou began to walk upon the trail, overgrown with grass and weeds. "Is there anything about this mountain you can tell me," Mahou asked Taiz.

"Well, I can only tell you speculation and stories about this place, I do not know if they are true or not. The elders say there used to be a civilization upon the mountain, but something terrible happened. The grand city used to be a place where white sorcerers would come together and live in harmony. But, one day, a darkness spread over the city, and it fell to ruins. No one has been there since, and no one came out, so my kind never found out the truth." Taiz finished her small story. Taiz felt that this information was insuffiecent, but Mahou found that it was enought for now. Maybe they could find more answers when they found these ruins from Taiz's story.

The journey around the mountain was not hard, but it left Mahou tired. They had found the ruins, but she needed to recuporate before she explored them. When they reached the end of the trail, she rested as she looked down into a small valley hidden from any kind of view below. It seemed to be a giant hole in the mountain itself, kind of like a volcanoe. All buildings were made out of white stone, much different than the brown rock the mountain was made out of. All the buildings were also collapsed, some worse than others. A heavy fog shrouded many parts of the valley, making it hard to see the sights. Houses, small sqaure buildings, covered most of the ground, but were covered in water. Only those buildings at higher levels remained free from the water. One building, a palace, stood above the water, sparkling in the dying sunlight. The high towers were crushed and only the main body of the castle remained. That would be the first place she would explore, Mahou decided.

Taiz stood on a small rock not too far away. She stared at the palace, her eyes searching. "You can tell this place was created by sorcerers." Mahou looked to Taiz with a questioning look. "It's quite obvious," Taiz laughed, "This white stone did not come from the mountain. The only way the stone came to be here was by some strong magic that transported here. Plus I sense magic enmanating from the palace down there. Come on, lets go explore!!" and with those last words, Taiz flitted towards the castle, flying above the water.

Mahou followed, using age old debri as a bridge across the water. The water was deep, meaning that there must be more levels of houses and stonework far beneath the water. The water in some places was clear and she could see the bottom covered in sand and water plants. In other places the water was murky, allowing no one to peer within it's depths. She reached the end of the valley after jumping across rock to rock for about an hour. The bottom of her robes were wet and dirty and she took off her shoes because they were filled with water. She walked to the front of the palace in her bare feet to meet Taiz who sat laughing at her discomfture.

The doors to the palace were tall and twice as wide. They were made out of the same white stone, but ornate carving covered both sides. She could not tell if the carving meant anything or not, but she decided not to worry about it now. She pushed on the doors and they easily moved on their old hinges. They swung silently in and she walked into the palace. She found herself in a large hallway with another pair of double doors at the end. On the sides, pillars soared to the cavernous ceiling, making Mahou feel smaller than she really was. Doors leading further into the palace stood behind the pillars, shrouded in darkness.

Mahou decided to find out what was behind the door at the far end of the palace. Taiz followed but she seemed disturbed and kept glancing around. Soon Mahou reached the double steel doors and tugged on the wide handles. The door creaked open and they found themselves in a large room with a white throne at the opposite end. But, here, Mahou sensed an evil presence. And, as she looked at the throne, a dark shape began to materialize before her eyes. The shape took on the form of a man but he had no defining features. He was all black, so dark he seemed to suck out all of light around him from the air.

The shape spoke, "Ah a visitor, we have not had one for so long. Finally, I shall have some fun." Laughter erupted from all sides of her and Mahou's world seemed to darken. She could no longer see where she was and had no idea about where to go. She stumbled onto her knees and she began to panic in the prenatural darkness. The laughter only increased and soon she could not think straight. The darkness took away her sanity. But then she thought of something. The light spell that Taiz had tought her. She opened her palm and concentrated her energy with all her might. She took her mind off of the terrible darkness long enough to start a small light upon the palm of her hand.

Soon the darkness did not take such a toll upon her mind. She even thought that the light began to grow, but it was probably just her mind playing tricks. She was now able to stand upon her feet and the light began to illuminate the area around her. The darkness began to recede and her light began to grow. The laughing had stopped and screaming had now began. The screaming scared her, but the light gave her courage to stand up. Soon all of the darkness was gone, and she soon saw the black man standing not too far away from her. He tried to draw away from the light, but the power of the light was too great. Soon the light began to shine through him, piercing his body and causing the screens. Soon he began to dissipate until his body had finally gone. Mahou no longer sensed any stragne presence and let her light go out.

Taiz came up to her and seemed almost pursting with excitment. "OH MY STARS!! You just defeated a dark spirit! They are one of the strongest evil demons upon this world. You are very strong in magic and thus you were able to defeat the monster. That demon must have been the reason why this city fell! Congrats!" Taiz finished her little speech and beemed at Mahou. Mahou felt proud and glad that she had found something in which she could be proud and something she could follow with all her heart.

And thus, the city had been freed and Mahou made her home in the castle. Many parts of the city were under water, leaving Mahou and Taiz many chances to have little water fights. Mahou found archives of old magic books, and Taiz began to teach her the arts of White Magic. She quickly grasped the idea of magic, and day by day her skills grew. The forgotten city was never affected by the evil presences ever again.

Every now and then Mahou would venture to the world outside, exploring more of the world that lay in such darkness. Among her adventures, she had found the Xian adoption agency. The dragons were being hunted down, and Mahou wanted to help. So, she decided to adopt a dragon and give it a good home where it would grow up in a safe enviroment.
