| Clouds above covered the sky, blocking out all chances of the sun's bright rays to reach the desecrated ground. It was as if the very sun were shunning the sight below it, as if trying to block the land from its view. And she could see why. The land about her would normally be barren, if left untouch. It was the kind of place that no plant would growl, a place that no animal would live. And yet, there was life... The dry, cracked ground was soaked, dry dusty dirt turned into mud beneath her feet. But it was not water that made the ground below churn and twist, it was blood... Blood ran in rivulets, both small and large streams strewn about her. She knew not where it came from, only that it was there, making her vision red. The wind blew, swirling the scent of blood and decay about her. Nen wrinkled her nose, still not used to the smell which had assaulted her for the past couple of nights. She probably would never be. Her nightmares tended to always be bloody, she knew not why. Maybe it was just what the sight of blood instilled in the minds of the populace. Death and decay, loss and ruin. But all she knew was that this was just another nightmare, like all the rest. The question was, how exactly did she know this was a nightmare? Usually when a person slept, they knew not that they were dreaming. Nor when the dream became a nightmare. So how was she so aware that this dream and decayed and became what she saw before her eyes? Ah well, nightmares were interesting, maybe it was good that she knew what the nature of this dream was. She looked up into the sky, knowing what was to come. This was her third dream with the field of blood, and always near the end of it the sky would rain down blood. So the rain of blood should be coming soon. She waited patiently, expecting for it to come, but she kept waiting. Nen wrinkled her forehead in a partial frown, wondering why it was not coming. If she could not even depend on her nightmares, what could she depend on? She then blocked all other thoughts from her dream filled mind and thnought of the rain of blood, thought of it pouring from the lifeless gray clouds, making the rivers wider and deeper. And then it came... The rain fell looslely at first, as if hesitant to let the earth soak up any more. But soon it came in great torrents, as if the sky no longer cared and wanted to let go of its weight. And soon the level of blood began to rise, making Nen's footing even harder to keep. Nen watched silently before the sun woke her up in the real world. * Nen woke to a knocking at her front door. Her vision of dreams faded away into the nothingness of her mind. She yawned and stretched and hurried out of bed. Sunlight poured into her small little house, illuminating all that was within. She hurriedly closed the drapes, blocking all chances of sunlight coming through, blocking the scene outside. Her dragon home was on the edge of a dead field. It had been a while since she had come here, and she had been waiting for a dragon ever since. Every day she wished for a dragon to keep her company in the desolate wastes, but she still had to keep on wishing. She finally made it to the front door, luckily not half killing herself on the way. Opening the front door, another shaft of sunlight spilled through the door. Darn, there goes her darkness Hi Nen! A happy shout came from not too far away. Nen quickly adjusted to the bright light and looked to find Yama standing not too far away. What brings you all the way out here? Nen asked with a slight smile. Her home truly was the farthest away from the center of the forest, where almost everything took place. We have good news! Here come with me, I shall explain on the way there, Yama said, his voice still full of happiness. Nen did not bother to ask, and hurried to pull her boots on. She met Yama outside of her little cottage, the black unicorn nearly prancing with eagerness. Geez, what is with you today, she asked as they began their journey back to the Forest. They followed a thin path that lead to the center of the Forest, one that she was obligated to maintain among her other expected duties. I have really good news! Well, Darkelf had an extra egg! Darkelf was the agency that Desiree, the leader of the Forest, maintained along with a friend. Yama usually told her what was the latest with Darkelf and the Forest, so what was so different about this time? And? She asked when she realized Yama had stopped speaking only to build suspense. Evil unicorn Well, Desiree had it brought to the Forest. You are to take care of it! Tee hee! Nen smiled, happily contemplating her new dragon. * Ah, there you two are! Desiree stood up from where she was sitting beneath the tree. The clearing was large, with all sorts of trails leading off into the farther reaches of the Forest. SoYama told me about an egg, Nen said hopefully. It was almost too hard to believe that it was finally her turn to take care of an egg of her very own. Of course! I know that you will take great care of it! Follow me, Desiree said as she led Nen down a wide trail. In only a few minutes Nen and Desiree found themselves in front of the cottage that all of the information centered around. Wait right here, Desiree said as she went into the cottage. She soon came out after a few minutes with a large leather knapsack in her hands. She placed it into Nens hands and stepped back. Alright, here you go! Raise it well! Nen smiled and headed back to the clearing. Yama was already sleeping at the side of the forest, his hooves moving in the patterns of dreams. Nen hurried down the trail back to her own home, practically running all the way. * Well, little egg, I think you will do fine in my care, Nen said beaming. She still could not get over the fact that she now had an egg to take care, and would soon have a companion in her adventures. As soon as she had come home, she had placed the egg securely in its nest. It still lay in the same exact place, an aura of peace surrounding it. Nen looked outside as she yawned. The sun had gone down hours ago, and she had still had not slept at all. Maybe now she should get some sleep * A sound woke Nen late at night. She grumbled and climbed out of bed, following the sound to find the source. She soon found herself where the egg was kept, but she could see nothing. She opened the window, letting the moonlight spill into her small house. She bent and looked down at the egg, which rocked violently back and forth. You must be hatching! She had had the egg for a week now, and she had been expecting for the egg to hatch. And soon the rocking became more violent, a loud breaking echoed through the house. The small dragons beak began to break through the hard shell, getting its first breath of fresh air. Nen helped the small dragon out, clearing the pieces of egg away from the little dragons scales. The little dragon chirped weakly, still recovering from its fight to free himself. Nen sat back against the nearest wall, letting the small hatchling to curl up on her lap. She looked him over, watching his blue and black scales raise gently up and down as he slept. Finally, her very own dragon. She soon fell asleep in the moonlight, the small hatchling still curled on her lap. * The wind blew cold against her face, making her cheeks sting. It was dark, almost too dark, but she was able to see a couple of feet before her. Nen found herself on a small trail, leading through the darkness to who knows where. She knew this was another dream, another nightmare, but it did not seem as bad as the others were. She was almost disappointed. She looked to her left and right, wondering what would stand out in this nightmare. It took her a few moments, but she finally realized what it was. All plant life, all of it, was shades of blue and black. The roses and the leaves She heard a chirping above her in the branches of the trees. And soon a shape flew down to land at her feet. She looked down and barely noticed her little dragon sitting at her feet in the dark gloom, chirping away. Hey, look who joined me! She picked up the little dragon that curled up in her arms. You need a name She thought quickly about it. Well, if her dragon joined her in the realm of nightmares, maybe a name like nightmare? No, Nightmare seems to boorish. But Akumu! That name meant nightmare and it did not seem so boorish as nightmare. I have it, Littling! I shall call you Akumu! |
