A rivalry like no other, OU-Nebraska is built on mutual respect and national title contention. Many great games have been played by these two storied programs, in which who is expected to win doesn't always come out the winner. The series record is 39-36-3 in OU's favor, however Nebraska has won the last 7 games. This series is as even as any you will find. There have been so many great players for both teams that have played in this game that you could not possibly mention them all. But the two players who will be in the spotlight saturday are none other than the quarterbacks.
Eric Crouch is a phenomenal option quarterback with tremendous speed to hit the corner. He uses his big running backs and linemen to tire the defense, and then he quickly hits a seem and scores. It is necassary that Crouch have a big day for Nebraska to beat Oklahoma, as well as give himself a chance at the Heisman Trophy.
Josh Heupel is the field general for the Sooners. He uses his mind to outsmart and correctly position his troops on the field, and then methodically attacks his opponent with his arm. Heupel will rely on his offensive line to protect him from the Nebraska pass rush, so that he can hit his fleet of wide recievers. For OU to win this game, they need Heupel to strike early and often against the Nebraska secondary. Heupel can also better himself in the eyes of Heisman voters with a big win to go along with some amazing numbers, he could very well be the winner of the Heisman Trophy this year.
The history of this rivalry has paved the way for legends to be made and heroes to be born, so for another player for either team to step up and have a big impact on the outcome of this game is not out of question. This series has certainly seen some electrifying moments in college football history. Game of the Century I was played in 1971, with Nebraska coming out the winner, and Johnny Rodgers was the star. Game of the Century II was played in 1987, with Oklahoma being the winner, and the entire defense came out of Lincoln the heroes. Now comes a new millenium for an old school rivalry. The offense's may be different, the defense's might be different, but one thing remains the same... The winner will be #1. Here's to the Game of the New Century... BOOMER SOONER!!!
