I have never played a Megaman videogame or watched one of the animated series. In fact, I don’t believe I’ve really ever played any video games.

I’ve read only one of the Harry Potter books, and that’s because a friend who’s an enthusiastic fan insisted. I’ve seen maybe three episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, again because of friends who are fans, and have never watched most other TV shows, including most anime. And I’ve managed to get my hands on exactly two Rurouni Kenshin manga long enough to read them.

Some of this is due to lack of access, some due to lack of interest, but it basically means that most of what I know about these and other fandoms comes from friends and/or osmosis. (You just try avoiding some of them.)

And I confess. I am not a fan of Harry Potter. I am not a fan of Star Wars. Or Star Trek.

Does this mean I hate them? No. But I don’t go out of my way to seek out material related to them.
And then there's Megaman, which as I mentioned, I have never encountered any of the games or series for. So if anyone can tell me why (or even how) the heck it's gotten into my brain...? It was bad enough when it was just the classic series. Then the X series wandered in too, and the .EXE series got itself tolerated, and the Zero series seems to be trying to have a go as well…Just kill me now.

Then there are other fandoms that I read (and even write for) that I do not actually consider myself a fan of. This is usually when I am not enraptured with the canon; there are elements that I know drew me to it in the first place, but have enough issues with the rest of it to be less than enthusiastic. (An excellent example is Yu-Gi-Oh, where my mental version of Yami is chasing his more recent canon-imprint around, yelling furiously in Ancient Egyptian and doing his best to fry him with Shadow Magic, summoned beasts, spells, whatever...)

Of course, there are others that I will not only happily admit to being a fan of but can be hard to make shut up about. It’s not hard to tell which these are.
