| MARCY'S LIFE OF OBSESSIONS........... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It didn't begin until the late 80s (I can hardly remember 84-90 as it is except for certain things), when I first discovered the opposite sex. Not that all my obsessions were based on cute/attractive men, but they played a HUGE part. :) Even as a young girl. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| One of the first tv-shows that I remember was called "The Noozles", now they were cartoon koala bears - not the hottest thing in the world - but I have to say some of the situations they got themselves into sparked my imagination. Not in a perverted way, not yet anyway ;) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| My next big memory of being obsessed with something is that of Westley from "The Princess Bride". Now, it came out in 1987, but I'm sure I didn't see it until around 1990. Then I basically GREW UP on that movie. For a long time I only knew the lovely looking guy as Westley, I didn't understand that he wasn't real, he was being played by Carey Elwes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Around the same time - it's really all just a blur now anyway - I saw the BBC-produced TV movie versions of "Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader" (I loved C.S.Lewis Chronicles of Narnia even then) and became obsessed with yet another fictional man, this time his name was Prince Caspian. It wasn't until years later I found out his real name was Samuel West. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SIMULTANEOUS CARTOON CRUSHES: LEONARDO FROM TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, JUSTIN FROM THE SECRET OF NIMH, AND BRUCE WAYNE FROM BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The next major "crush" that I remember happened while I was at Day Care and I would tell people that Friday evening was "Brisco County Jr" night, and me and my mom would watch him religiously. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This is where the biggies start. From 1993-1996ish, The original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" were on tv. Now I remember going to school each morning to converse with my friend Sydney over who was the best of the two girl Power Rangers. And once Tommy (The Green-Then-White Ranger - DUH) came along, I felt complete. Boy was he cute. Forget that cowboy Brisco or that sword-slashing Westley or the tights-wearing Prince Caspian, Tommy could kick ass and still was cute and sensitive. And when he was hurt, ooooh I just wanted to be his own personal nurse :) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Here's the BIGGEST of them all, by far. It was 1994 and I stumbled upon a TV movie called "Good King Wenceslas". Who played the title character? A young man by the name of Jonathan Brandis. He was my first love. Well, in a way. I had posters of this kid plastered all over my room. And when I learned he was on a sci-fi show called "SeaQuest DSV" - even better. So I started watching the show to see Jon every week and then I began to watch it to see the show every week. I was in love with him for a good four or five years. I saw everything he was in even if it was a movie he had made when he was 10, like "The Neverending Story 2" or "Stephen King's It". Some of my favorite Brandis movies are "Ladybugs" and "Born Free: A New Adventure". And he was even in "Hart's War", "Ride With The Devil", and "Outside Providence", and even though those were very small roles, I still rented each of them and jumped for joy when I got a glimpse of a now-grown-up Jon. I still consider him one of the hottest things on earth even if I haven't seen him recently. Without him and SeaQuest I swear I would not be the same young woman that I am today. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Now comes the vague string of crushes/obsessions that I can't even distinguish actual times to, and they overlap my love affair with Jon so they can NOT be considered real love. They were only mild distractions. All I have is dates. In 1994, when "Jurassic Park" came out on video, I was allowed, by my parents, to finally see it. I fell for quirky and sometimes strange looking Jeff Goldblum, and subsequently rented all his movies from our local Blockbuster. That same year, 1994, I rented the campy martial arts movie "Street Fighter", and didn't really fall in love with anyone (I'm not a big fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme so he doesn't get his own link) but the story line had my imagination running wild for months. In 1996, "Dragonheart" came out and I fell in love with Dennis Quaid. An added bonus to that was that he and I shared the same birthday - granted many many years apart - but it was something. Again in 1996, the Sly Stallone flick "Daylight" came out (did I have an attraction to crappy movies or what?) and my imagination was again entertained and I was introduced to the loveliness of Sage Stallone, and Viggo Mortensen. Jon was still lovely and all, but these guys seemed so much more......grown up. (I sentence Teen Bop and Tiger Beat to eternal damnation for this). '96 was also the year I discovered "Poltergeist: The Legacy" and their resident cutie Martin Cummins. In 1997 I stumbled across one of the "Highlander" movies and fell for french actor Christopher Lambert - who also changed my life because he led me to meet some of the greatest people in the world on his fanlist. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Sadly, the love between me and Jon ['s pictures], wasn't meant to last. Soon after it came out on video in 1997, I saw "Romeo & Juliet" with Leo DiCaprio. I wasn't as obsessed with him as I had been with Jon, but he was enough to make me forget about Jon for the time being. And there would be more distractions after Leo. **Sigh** | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Enter here the now-defunct pop duo from Australia Savage Garden. I still remember the day I was sitting in my grandfather's living room. It was early morning and nobody else in the house was up, and I had the tv all to myself. I flipped on MTV and what did I see? This GORGEOUS guy singing to me. Sure, the video for "I Want You" was cheesy and Darren [Hayes] looked too feminine with that long straggily hair, but he had me from hello. He's still one of my undying obsessions even after the pain of Savage Garden's breakup. Let's just say the fact that he has an amazing voice is just an added bonus for me ;) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Since there was no real period to be called 'after Darren', I just continued to love and follow him while lusting over dozens and dozens of men at the same time. 2001 was an incredibly hard year for me because "The Fellowship of the Ring" came out, and there were just too many guys to drool over. What's a girl to do? But I made it through. Now the main man I lust and drool over is Johnny Depp - but that's bound to change sooner or later. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
