Second class of network is Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)

Definition:
A high-speed network that connects local area networks(LANs) in a metropolitan area such as in a city.

Main characteristics of MAN:
    # Area of coverage
MANs connect various locations such as campuses and offices that are frequently used as links between buildings.

    # Ownership
MANs are owned by a group of company and organizations who jointly own and operate the network.

    # Distance
MANs span(cover) distance up to 100 miles (161 Km)

Types of Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)--->Campus Area Network(CAN)

Campus Area Network(CAN)
Definition:
A type of computer network interconnecting a few local area networks(LANs) within a university campus or corporate campus.

Description:
In a CAN, every building or department, has its own LAN connection and few LANs group together to make a MAN

Advantages and Disadvantages of Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)

Advantages
Disadvantages
Everyone shares the same access to the Internet through a high speed
Residents need to possess their own hardware and software in order to connect to the MAN and this leads to high costs
MAN is able to connect people in different locations, regardless of distance.
In the MAN, full attention needs to be given to security in order to avoid spam, hackers and other security risks.
