Wayne Kramer (ex-MC5), Flaming Sideburns @ Tavastia, Helsinki June 25th, 2003

By Tommi Lindqvist

I've never done any show reviews but here it goes...

I was working an evening shift that day, so I wasn't sure I would be able to make it there. But luckily I got out at 7 pm and got there nice'n early. Actually I knocked down couple of pints of lager (four, to be precise) at the nearby Pub 28, in case someone knows the Helsinki area. The doors opened at 9 pm, I was there at 9.05, because I didn't buy a ticket in advance. The show wasn't sold out.

After enjoying a couple more expensive beers and drooling at the beautiful rock n roll girls walking by, at 10.30 Wayne Kramer and his 4 piece band hit the stage. They played about four songs and then Wayne said something like I know it's hard for you to enjoy songs you've never heard before, so we're gonna play something you'll recognize, and then started playing Rambling Rose, Kick Out The Jams and Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa, and after a while American Ruse (all by the MC5). Wayne Kramer has been playin' for a good 35 years, so his hard-workin' musician mentality can be seen and heard in his performance.

Local rock and roll group, the Flaming Sideburns, played last, which was a bit if a surprise for me. They started at midnight so I knew I could not see the entire set because the last bus leaves at 1.18 am. I should say they weren't as good as they might have been and neither was the audience, hence the wednesday evening alcohol consumption business (you figure that last one out). Their singer, Eduardo, didn't do any stage diving and neither did anyone else, I was disappointed in that.

I had to leave before the encore so I don't know anything about that. On the bus home after drinking 11 pints it was difficult to maintain conciousness and I started listening a conversation between a few drunken teenagers about whether there is a god or not (I almost joined the discussion, but didn't). I was home at 2.20 am.
