Wasted: Can't Wash Off The Stains 10" (Combat Rock Industry/Twisted Chords)

By Tuomas Koskinen

Every one of you knows Wasted, right? If not, you better get know them or YOU WILL BE ISOLATED FROM THE PUNK SCENE FOREVER! Just kidding. Wasted is the best punk rock band from Finland these days or maybe forever. I don't want to make too much hype, so I better continue the review...

It took three weeks for me to really get into this record. When I first listened to this, it was good, but now I am in love with this! I think in this record Wasted is more oi! than ever. Guitar solos and melodies are what oi! bands have. Maybe someone will disagree, but it's my opinion. Somehow those melodies remind me of the oi! legends, The Last Resort. And when it's mixed with straight punk rock it sounds really good! But more than anything else it sounds Wasted.

Ville sings really well. I think his voice just gets better & better record after record. I guess there are more backing vocals than before and guitar player, Antti, does those great while playing those great melodies. Drummer, Miikka, and bassist, Kalle, play also very well. Kalle does good bass lines, but it's sometimes kind of hard to hear it under the guitar (or maybe its just because of my stereos). Miikka plays enough variations so it's not just boring dang-chomp-dang-dang-chomp, but not even jazz. It's what it should be. AKA, punk rock.

First I didn't like the sounds because the vocals are mixed too low. But if the vocals are higher, it could hide those great guitar melodies. And the bass is maybe too low too, but this ain't fucking techno. And mostly it's good enough. So all in all, the sounds are good.

The lyrics are perfect for punk rock music. They're like personal and polemical at the same time. I don't know how to do it better.

Usually when a record has only 5 songs, I get the feeling like: "That's all?", but not in this time. This is good and when the side B is over you can start from side A again. I have the feeling that this will happen many, many times on my turntable.

Tracklist:

1. Hands Untied
