Drowning Nation: Demo Tammikuu 2003

By Tuomas Koskinen

Wow! I was really excited when my dad said that I had mail and gave me a envelope where I found this demo. This is the first demo we got from anyone!

Enough shit talkin, back to business...

I was listening to Warzone's Fight For Justice when I got this demo. I put it right away, but the style kind of continued even though I had changed the record. So I would say Drowning Nation is Warzone style hardcore and maybe some Minor Threat with it too.

The sounds in this record are good. This demo was recorded in January '03 so it's really new. I don't know if this was recorded in studio or what, but I've heard official releases which didnt sound this good. Vocals are mixed high enough, but it does not leave the rest of the band behind.

The riffs are good, simple but not repetitive. The band plays well together. The drummer does his job fine. It's not just champ-champ-dang-dang-dang, there's enough filling and stuff. This band has played a year now, but the guys have played before in several bands. They're not novices and it can be heard.

I think vocals are lame. It's not really bad, rahter at least OK, but I think some rage and shouting would make it better. Something like Raybeez or Roger Miret. But I don't know how long the singer has sung in band. I know it takes some time to find the right way to sing. I can remember our first jams with Extinct Leaders where I'm singer. I can tell it sounded awful...

There's also some backing vocals and it's always nice to hear backing vocals. That's ok stuff.

The lyrics are also good. Some songs are personal and some songs more like political.

All in all I like this demo. I didn't get any information about line up, which is a little minus.

Here comes short review of each song:

1. Can You Feel?
Not a bad song, but maybe there are too many of this kind of song Absolutely not bad song in anyway.

2. Hands Clean
I think this is the weakest link in this demo. I wouldn't say it's bad, but maybe too average. But the mosh part is kind of a good one!

3. The Fence Between
I think this is the best song. Starts with bass and vocals, which sounds good. Riffs are also good. I like the chorus very much where the backing vocals sing "revoluuutiooon!"

4. All Your Efforts
Good song. Basic stuff musically. There's a good speaking part.

5. Still Waiting
Not a bad song either, but nothing special.

6. Incomplete
My other favorite song mostly because I like the last part very much. Hard to image it, but it's good.
