Danko Jones, Sweatmaster at Lutakko, Jyvskyl (March 1, 2003)

By Tuomas Koskinen

On Saturday I had that should I stay or should I go feeling. Then I decided to go because there's not a rock show every weekend. I hadn't heard either of the bands, but I'm into good rock music. But, really, who's not?

I went to Lutakko early because I didn't have a ticket and there was some left at the door.

I went to see what merch stuff there was. There were Sweatmaster records, Danko Jones records, shirts, etcthe usual band-stuff. I decided to buy something after the show. After that I just sat and waited for Sweatmaster to start playing.

The drummer's set was kind of surprise. It was simple with only the things that are necessary. There were three guys in the band. The bass player was the singer while the guitarist did backing vocals. Sweatmaster was exactly what I expected: good Rock n Roll. It was an energetic show and I liked it.

When Sweatmaster was playing I went to buy a bottle of soda. It wasn't cheap, but what can you do... I noticed that there were a lot of people which is always a good thing for the atmosphere.

There was some more waiting and then Danko Jones and his band arrived on stage. And then Mr. Jones took me for his Rock n Roll ride. The songs weren't familiar to me, but still they got me. Great rock music!

Danko Jones said some usual things like: "We got great audience here tonight!" and "Were rocking hard, but it seems you wanna rock harder!" But it seemed that he really meant it. The whole band seemed to be really excited to play. Like Mr. Jones said: "I'm gunna work so hard here that I will sweat some blood!" He really communicated with his audience. Someone yelled Vancouver and Jones was like: "No, we're not from Vancouver. We're from Toronto." There was a guy who wore a Maple Leafs' shirt and Danko said something like "It seems that we got some connection with our audience." Actually he didn't say that line, but something about the Maple Leafs and how they've come "kind of home." Oh, and when Danko said isn't there some Finnish player in the Maple Leafs, the audience yelled "Jyrki Lumme!" Enough said about the speeches.

Danko Jones really rocked. Songs were the way rock songs should be. The sounds were mixed very well. We got an encore after shouting enough.

Then I bought Danko Jones' record, a badge and went home.

I really enjoyed the gig and I'm so happy that I went. And I still want to say some more about how excited I am about the show and Danko Jones, but it's obvious and you don't want to read any more praising. But I still have to say three more things: Girls, Guitar and R'N'R!
