Golf Opener April 30 - May 2, 2004
Come one, come all as we kick off the 2004 golf season in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2003, there were 4 of us who traveled to Brainerd MN over Mother's Day for the 1st Annual Golf Opener. We enjoyed some great courses at a great price and were all set to do it again this year but with 3 overriding factors: one, most of us are spread throughout the Midwest; two, Mother's Day weekend eats up some serious brownie points; and three, weather so another plan was hatched. Why April 30th in Des Moines? Well, it doesn't conflict with Mother's Day, it's central to our golfers in Minneapolis MN, Lincoln NE, and Bloomington IL, and we stand a better chance of having some very pleasant weather. In addition, there are 3 outstanding courses in the Des Moines area. We will meet in Des Moines the evening of April 29th for 108 holes of golf in 3 days. I'll provide additional details (lodging, tee times, etc.) as we get closer to the opener. Area Golf Courses (click on course name for website): The Harvester is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Des Moines IA. It's rated the # 1 course in Iowa - public or private. It's also ranked # 84 in the top 100 modern US courses. I've played it on two occasions and have been very pleased with the course layout, playing conditions, and my score!
The Tournament Club of Iowa is located about 10 minutes northwest of Des Moines. It is an Arnold Palmer designed which opened summer 2003 and will be host to a senior PGA tour stop in 2004. It's every bit as good as Harvester and is sure to be rated a "best new course" in 2004.
The Legacy Golf Club is located about 10 minutes south of West Des Moines. A recent issue of Golf Digest ranked The Legacy the # 10 best new affordable course in the country.
