From the start Portuguese coins and those which were obtained through foreign trade made up the coinage of this Province. LOPES FERNANDES described, in his Memoria das Moedas Correntes em Portugal, what used to happen in the 19th century."The coins of the Realm are used in this Province, the 8000 ris or 8 and 1/3 Patacas and the new silver Cruzados selling for 500 ris and buying for 480 ris are both rare pieces; and their fractions in silver are also in use. The copper and bronze pieces are identical to those in Portugal. All foreign coins are accepted at market value, just like any other goods, but in foreign transactions the nominal coin is the Pataca valued at 800 strong ris. In the Island of Boa Vista the same nominal coin exists, even for internal transactions, where the Pataca is reckoned at 800 weak ris - this was the information given to the Metropolitan Government by the General Governor of Cabo Verde on the 16th February 1846. The Decree of 19th October 1853 ordered all Portuguese coins to be in current use and at the same value as those of the Realm and that the same rates should apply to all foreign coins accepted in Portugal in the Decrees os 1846 and 1847". ALVARO LERENO, in Subsidios para a Histria da Moeda em Cabo Verde (1460-1940), speaks of the hardships endured by the people of this land due to lack of their own money, and the constant scarcity of currency from the Mother Country, from Angola and also from foreigners with whom they had trade conections. The first metal coin from this Overseas Province appeared with the Decree nr.18495 of the 24th January 1930. |
