| Every year there is one, a racing driver who comes into F1 purely on the back of heavy sponsorship and not in anyway as a result of ability. Alex Yoong appears to be this years catastrophe. This years Mazzacane. Except and say this quietly, "he is possibly EVEN worse!" You see Mazzacane at least had something, albeit not very much but occasionally you got at least a glimpse that underneath all the poor qualifying times and slow laps there might have been the essence of a reasonable driver just waiting to get out. Remember Indianapolis 2000? Evidence indeed that maybe Mazzacane at least had something. But not with Yoong.all you see with Yoong is a man who qualifies 22nd on the grid, and its not even as though he manages that all the time. A recent DNQ meant that he wasn't even allowed to start the race. It doesn't help that he has another of Minardi's brilliant finds as his teammate. Mark Webber appears to have something and is another, `Briatore Babe` earmarked for better things. Alex Yoong, however is not, and will be in formula one only for as long as his sponsorship holds out and Paul Stoddart doesn't get a better offer. |
