1:23pm We paddled closer and its head came up out of the water. We all grab our cameras and try and get in a few shots before it disappears under the lake again. It comes up again and snorts and sprays water through its nostrils, I think it was telling us to leave. The hippos were probably about 30 feet away as we paddled away. A once in a lifetime experience to witness hippos from a small wooden boat in the middle of Lake Victoria.
4:45pm We await a Lakeside football game that was supposed to start at 4pm, but it’s African time so we probably have a good hour before the players take the field. There are tapes of Luo music playing and children dancing everywhere, showing off for us. I’ve fallen in love with every single child here.
11pm Lakeside won the match, they played in the new boots that a volunteer had bought for them (most usually play barefoot). There were so many fans; mothers, wives, children, grandparents and friends. At the end they had a ceremony that lasted for over 2 hours (this happens at most games), they all took turns talking and then took up a collection for the weekends tournament in Migori. The muzungus and the elders are sitting in chairs and on benches while everyone crowds around on the ground. I feel way too important.
