My journal entries only begin to describe my journey in Kenya, words and photos can not capture the true experience...

12:30pm     It’s been great getting to know the other volunteers.  I was definitely not expecting to create close relationships with them, but we’ve all traveled independently for various reasons, many similar, and now have someone to share our experiences with.  I am also the one with the funny accent, the only American right now.

At the clinic, I have been getting patients checked in when they first arrive, taking age, temp, and weight, etc.  It is difficult to judge age here, one 4-month old I would have guessed was not even a month.  Most patients are children.  Tuesdays and Thursdays are the mother workshops.  New mothers and moms-to-be come to get check-ups and talk with a nurse.  I swear the children here are more beautiful than anywhere else.

Senye Primary-More children came to my class today.  I worked with the baby class, it’s probably equivalent to our pre-schools.  I write letters for them and check off their assignments in their books.  The children are pretty much out of control.  They like to run around and beat each other up, they don’t listen, they can’t sit still, and they like to take sticks and hit each other or throw dirt at each other.  So when they’re disobedient, they get caned and it doesn’t faze them one bit.  I also brought a pencil sharpener today; I wasn’t fond of using a razor blade.  Who knew sharpening pencils could be so difficult.

10:00pm     I’ve learned African time, a 2pm meeting starts at 3:30 or 4.  Even when we try, I don’t think we’ve ever been on time to anything.

Occurrences of the day that may be note-worthy:  Musa also has malaria, he’s not doing very well.  Chris and I went up on the rocks for the sunset but it was cloudy.  I fell on my ass on one of the rocks, ow.  Chris dropped his Nutella covered muffin over the side of the rocks, followed by his bug spray – at the time it was really funny.  I taught him how to play speed, we’re hooked.  And we talked and compared America and England on many circumstances.

I’ve realized that I miss home, but in a different way then just being homesick.  I can’t wait to finish my schooling to be able to help more here and other places.  They don’t have the education opportunities that we do so I know how badly I need to make use and take full advantage of mine.
