Teaching Update
Wow! I've been gone for about 7 weeks now. It seems crazy but things have been busy and moving quickly around here. Since I have not written for about a month, I will start at the beginning and break up by time into major things that have happened.
First off the first week of school was hectic. This being my first year teaching I didn't know exactly what to expect. I knew what I needed to do, but I didn't know how it was all going to work out. My kids seemed to be well behaved, probably because they were unsure of what I was going to be like. They were very quite at first. It was hard to get them to say anything, one because they are not confident in their English and 2 they did not know me. In my classes my students names are very odd to Americans. Their Thai names are very long and hard to pronounce so their parents choose nicknames for them. Now you need to understand that the students parents may not know much English either so they choose names of things that they know. So some of my students are called Golf, Pop, Soda, Bank, Fern, Math (who hates math by the way), Champ, Tee. I do have some normal named studnets like Anna, Mac, Max, Jo, Ben. It was weird at first calling a student Pop or Golf, but after awhile it just becomes their name and it's not so strange.
I do enjoy teaching but it does take a long time to prepare because i need to teach students will limited English. They do understand a lot of what I say, but i need to use smaller words to describe bigger words that we use everyday. At times it is frustrating but then it also keeps me on my toes and I can't get lazy:)
We are working on an Ecology unit right now. We are talking about how living things interact with their envirnonment. It is intersting and the students seems to enjoy it. It is science on a large scale. It's also something they can see happening almost everyday. We will soon be talking about how humans affect the environment and how we can conserve and preserve what we have been given. Because this is a Christian school I can bring God into the equation which is cool! If you have any questions that you would like me to answer about the school or teaching feel free to ask. I'm not sure what you would like to know.
