She Lay
And so she lay
On that boiling hot night in May
Wide awake eyes, staring at the ceiling
Mind reeling
Into and out of the land of sleep and dreams
As she lay staring up at the beams
That arched above her head
As she lay restlessly in bed.
And so she lay
Knowing the time had come to pay
For all the long lazy mornings she'd speant in dreamland
Now she longed for the touch of the Sandman's hand
Eyes closed tight
To shut out the faintest glimmer of light
A wave of sleep washed over her mind
She thanked God for being so mercifully kind.
And so she lay
Warm as a stable cat in a bed of hay
One hand hidden in her hair
The other clutching a teddy bear
With his wise old smile
As if he had known all the while
That only when he was in her arms
Would she be safe from all harm.
