Promising
Stars
When I think of all the things I’ve lost
Buttons, pencils, homework, money. A friend.
I wonder why the thing I missed the most
Was my history homework,
True, I got a detention for not doing it
But what’s detention, compared to loneliness?
I just opened my bag and it wasn’t there
With my teacher standing over me
I couldn’t not know
But I didn’t notice as you slipped away
I didn’t notice until you were gone
And by then it was too late
By then I was surrounded by darkness
The sun forever gone from my sky
The stars shining so far away
With promises of new hope
But they are further away than I can ever go
So they can only ever be promising stars
Their promises unkept.
