Monkey

By Ezika and Rachel

Ezika's Note: Ok, I thought I’d try writing my first song fic. Since Adam Duritz wrote this song for Courteney Cox while she was dating him, I thought it’d be appropriate. I don’t think anyone else has used this song, if they have, I’m sorry. I don’t own the characters, Warner Bros. does. And Counting Crows on the lyrics.

Rachel's Note: I decided to finish this after Ez got tired doing it. Ezika may not own the characters or the song, but I do. I wonder if anybody important reads this? Just in case... I really don't own them :-(

This is set when Chandler and Monica have just started dating and they are still sneaking around.

Damn it, damn it, damn it! Chandler had raced home from work, looking forward to his first REAL date with Monica that night. He was taking her to dinner at a restaurant over on the other side of town, so that there was absolutely no chance of any of their friends seeing them. Now though, he had gone into his bedroom to get changed, only to find a pair of Monica’s panties on the bed. He smiled, guessing she was teasing him about what to expect later that night. He picked the black lacy panties up to hide them before Joey came barging in and demanded to know what woman was crazy enough to leave Chandler Bing her underwear. That was when he saw the note.

Dear Chandler

I’m really sorry but I have to work late tonight. I’m sorry our first date is ruined, but I get off at half eleven and I’ll make it up to you then, I promise.

Monica

All dressed up
No place to go

He sighed and threw her panties back down on the bed in disappointment. He couldn’t help noticing she had signed the note "Monica" and not "Love Monica", but he couldn’t blame her; who wanted their first "I love you" to be written down?

Chandler watched TV alone until eleven pm. Alone, because Joey was on yet another date with yet another girl. Ross was probably still trying to get Emily to talk to him. And Rachel and Phoebe weren’t likely to choose to hang out over here, especially Rachel, who was still recovering from having been forced to live here for a while.

"Are you thinking about me Mon?" he asked himself aloud. He hoped she was, because he couldn’t get her out of his head. He couldn’t wait to be with her later, and hoped she would fulfil her promise of making it up to him. Chandler found he couldn’t really concentrate on the TV, so he switched it off and went into his bedroom to wait for her.

Hey monkey, when you gonna show your face around me?
I know all the wrongs and rights
And I just want a little light to fall on me

He must have fallen asleep, because he woke up suddenly almost an hour later. A glance at the clock next to his bed told him it was midnight. She was late. Monica was NEVER late. He began to worry. At first, simply that she had decided not to come over, that she didn’t want to spend time with him. Then thoughts of all the terrible things that could have happened to her on her way home started to creep into his head. Chandler wondered if she had walked home, he hoped not. The thought of his beautiful, vulnerable Monica walking home at night, in New York City, terrified him.

Hey monkey, where you been?
This lonely spiral I've been in
Hey monkey, when can we begin?
Hey monkey, where you been?

The only way to stop thinking about her being in an accident, was to convince himself that she simply didn’t want to see him tonight. Chandler focused as hard as he could on that. It still hurt, but not as much as the thought of losing her or something. Tears were pricking his eyes as the imagined Monica casually tossed aside her promise to him, but Chandler refused to allow himself to stop thinking it, because he knew if he did, even worse things would torment him.

We'll I'm all messed up
That's nothing new

Chandler lay down and tried to go back to sleep. He even counted sheep, just to give his mind something to focus on other than Monica. He must have eventually fallen asleep, because he definitely woke up when he felt someone in bed with him. And that someone was giving him a blowjob. Chandler didn’t even have time to think, he was nearly there. He groaned and the woman (he HOPED it was a woman!!!) sucked even harder on him. When he was about to come, he grabbed her head and noticed the soft, long hair he thought, "Thank God! It IS a woman!" and held her on him.

When he was done, Chandler peeked under the sheet. Monica, wearing sexy lingerie with a slightly disgusted look on her face was looking back up at him.

Hey monkey, when you open up your blue eyes,
I don't know if I'm wide awake or dreaming
But all I ever need is everything

"I thought you weren’t coming," he stammered, pulling her up so he could kiss her.

"You definitely were though!" she joked when the kiss ended. Chandler blushed and she stroked his face tenderly. "I’m sorry. We had some trouble at the restaurant and I had to stay to help clean up," she explained her absence. "Then I had to go down to the police station with Allessandro and report it."

"What kind of trouble?" Chandler asked worriedly. Monica lay down next to him, and smiled as Chandler put his arm around her and pulled her close to him.

"Just a rowdy stag party. But they got drunk and some windows got smashed and tables broken. Nothing too serious, but Allessandro wanted to report it for the insurance," Monica explained.

"You’re ok though, right?" he asked, concerned.

"Yeah, I’m fine. Tired, but fine," she said with a smile.

"Oh," Chandler said, disappointment evident in his voice. He realised now why she had given him a blowjob, not only as an apology, but because she was too tired for full sex.

"I’m sorry, sweetie, I was really looking forward to tonight too."

"It's ok, really. We’ll have our date another time."

"Thank you for understanding," she flashed him a smile. "And I promise we can have sex in the morning."

"I’ll hold you to that," Chandler said, grinning.

They settled down to sleep, Chandler with his arms around Monica, spooning her. She fell asleep almost instantly, exhausted from her long day. Chandler stayed awake a while longer. He still needed his sleeping space, but he didn’t want to let go of her just yet.

Just get the world off your shoulders
and close your pretty blue eyes
Hey monkey, what's life without an occasional surprise?

Chandler kept looking at the clock on his desk, waiting until the numbers said 5:00 so he could go home and get ready for his date with Monica. He hoped that the night would go smoothly, and that things would work out between him and Monica. He glanced at the clock again, disappointed that the numbers hadn't changed in his 20 seconds of thought. He reached for the knob on the little radio and twisted it until a song came through the static. Chandler shook his head and placed it on his desk. He had put on the music to forget about Monica and make the time go faster, but instead he listened to her favourite song and he realised that he couldn't get her out of his mind because he was in love with her. This realisation scared him even more, because he wasn't sure if she loved him back.

Got nowhere but home to go
Got Ben Folds on my radio right now
I'm in trouble for the things I need
Hey monkey don't you want to be needed too?

She told him that it was ok to meet at her apartment. Rachel was out with Phoebe, and Joey was on a date. He knew that he had to tell her how he felt, even if she didn't feel the same way about him. He stepped out of his apartment with the flowers he picked up on his way home from work and walked the three steps it took to reach her apartment from his own. He lifted his fist to knock, and a moment later, she appeared at the door to greet him.

"Hi."

"Hi."

He stood there awkwardly for a moment before extending the flowers to her.

"These are for you."

"Thank you, they're beautiful. I just need one more minute to finish up."

"Ok, take your time." He sunk into the couch, and he knew that he could tell her that he loved her. It wouldn't be hard, it was Monica, he could tell anything to Monica. The thing that made easy for him to tell her was also the thing that made it hard. It was Monica, his best friend. As he was thinking, she stepped out of her room.

"Are you ok?" She noticed the apprehensive look on his face and became scared. She thought that Chandler didn't want to do this any more.

He snapped back into reality when he heard her questioning tone. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's go." He took her hand and led her out the door.

Hey monkey, where you been?
This lonely spiral I've been in

After they handed the menus back to the waiter and he left the table, Monica reached across and grabbed Chandlers hand.

"Thank you for taking me out tonight. You're a great date."

Chandler looked into her eyes as he began to talk. "Thank you for letting me take you out tonight. I was so scared that this would mess up our friendship and change everything. It has all changed, but for the better. This afternoon at work I realised something, and up until now, I kept trying to deny it, but there's no way around it. I love you Monica, and I had to tell you because it is eating me up inside and driving me crazy. Please don't get scared or think I'm joking because I'm not. Now please say something because I'm really nervous and you're looking at me like I'm crazy."

Monica moved her chair closer to his and wrapped her arms around his neck as she whispered her response in his ear. " I love you too Chandler."

Hey monkey, when can we begin?
Hey monkey, where you been?
