All you Old School B-Boys and OG-Girls have to know Tony G and Julio G, DJs and Mixmasters who, along with Eazy-E, hit the airwaves with the Ruthless Radio Show in the ’94! Their studio “The G Spot” and legendary show back in the day KDAY era made them two of the most sought after DJs in the City of Angels. And now they’re back, doing it up all over again with the Ruthless Radio Mixmasters Show every Saturday night from 7-10:00 p.m. on The Beat.

It all began on KDAY, the station that broke Rap and Hip-Hop to the mainstream. When the groove that kicked a nation in the butt began, KDAY realized it needed someone on the Latin tip. Kid Frost played the KDAY crew a tape of an El Monte prodigy, DJ Tony G. Soon; Tony was Saturday night’s favorite DJ and an inspiration to Julio G, a rising young DJ himself.

One night, Julio peeped a KDAY event. “I was kickin’ it with this guy for an hour, not realizing who it was. Later on somebody said, “Tony, man, this little guy’ll mess you up!” After Julio realized who he’d been talking to, the two went to battle. Speakers Thumped and sparks flew, but Tony threw a few tricks of his own, successfully defending his title. “We clicked, though, you know what I mean?”

Soon, KDAY was bumpin’ to the beat if those two mackin’ Mixmasters, “but contrary to popular belief, we weren’t making a dime.” They were hustling their own gigs, trying to make ends meet. One day they quit and, within six months, KDAY feel.

The G-Spot, Tony’s now legendary studio, was born, producing Mellow Man Ac’s hit “Mentirosa” and Frost’s “La Raza.” Tony opened the door up for Latin Rap, period,” says Julio. But life runs in cycles and the two drifted into some lyrical downtime. “We were young, didn’t really know about contracts, got ripped off…”

Then Eazy-E, an acquaintance from the KDAY days, popped back into their lives. “He was a hustler,” remembers Julio. “He’d bug you and bug you to play his album…” After NWA blew up, Eazy founded Ruthless records, eventually signing Frost. Through that deal, Eazy hooked up Julio and Tony, asking, “Do you want to do a radio show? Lets go mess with the beat!”

“We were so desperate, I would have washed his car.” Laughs Julio. They slid down to the station for a little chat and had the staff droolin’ for some ruthless entertainment. But, “while Eazy was in Brooklyn doing Bone’s video, the station slipped us a contract.” Even if The Beat’s brass didn’t know it, Tony and Julio understood that without Eazy, there was no show. “We stood up-at the same time- and said, It’s all of us or none of us.’ That’s why Eazy wasn’t on that video much, ‘cause he flew right back.” IN July of ’94, Ruthless Radio annihilated the airwaves with the Rap no one else would touch. But 1995 dealt a blow to the program and to the entire Rap world-Eazy discovered that he had contracted AIDS virus. “He didn’t look sick the day he went in,” remembers Julio. “He looked fine.” The Ruthless Radio Show came to an end.

Six months later, The Beat was beginning to get over the loss of one its own to the incurable virus. Tony and Julio, their producer, Zenobia, and Eazy’s widow, Tomika began working together to create The Ruthless Radio Mixmaster Show, all done out of respect of Eazy’s memory. “When I get tired or burnt out,” says Julio, “I remember that it’s still Eazy, Tony and me.” They’re staying true to the West Coast sound and LA Raza tambien. “I’m not trying to be a role model, but I’m representing both myself and my mom, if you know what I mean.” They’re holdin’ their heads up high and having a blast spinning the hottest wax able to hold a groove.
