TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PARK ![]() The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park comprises a group of 5 islands located between 3 to 8 km off Kota Kinabalu. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two thirds of which cover the sea. Before the Ice Age, it formed part of the Crocker Range mass of sandstone and sedimentary rock on the mainland. However, about one million years ago, the melting ice brought about changes in the sea level and parts of the mainland were cut off by the sea to form the islands of Gaya Island, Sapi Island, Manukan Island, Mamutik Island and Sulug Island. Evidence of this can be seen from the exposed sandstone of the coastline forming the cliffs, caves, honeycombs and deep crevices. The beauty of its natural environment combined with its close proximity to the mainland makes the island group a favourite among picnickers, divers and nature lovers. In a bid to protect the natural environment with its coral reefs, marine life, and its flora and fauna, the islands were gazetted as a National Park, beginning with Sapi Island and part of Gaya Island in 1974 and then embracing the other three islands in 1979. |
KOTA KINABALU ![]() Mount Kinabalu would probably be at the top of most people's top Sabah attractions because it is easily the tallest peak in Malaysia (4,101m) and one of Asia's most popular climbing destinations. Most climbers take two days, breaking the journey overnight at Laban Rata. It is hard work but a worthwhile experience. The second highest is Gunung Trus Madi at 2642m. Experts rate it as a fairly easy climb and from the top, weather conditions permitting, climbers can enjoy a fine view of Gunung Kinabalu. The third highest peak is Gunung Tambuyukon (2,579m). Although it is a lower altitude, it is the hardest of the three climbs and the view from the top is not that spectacular and for those reasons it is less frequently climbed. |
HOT SPRINGS (PORING, RANAU) ![]() The hot springs is the most visited area. Once you enter the park (opens from 9am to 5pm daily), just buy a ticket at the counter (RM15 (≈USD4.50) for foreigner adult, RM3 for local), then you can enjoy the hot spring in open area. We believe the hot sulphur spring has therapeutic properties that heal certain skin diseases, and the heat and minerals also can soothe muscles and improve blood and lymphatic circulation, thereby improving our health and skin. The water is from the mountain stream so it’s really icy cold that you will shiver in the pool. But you will get used to it after a while. The water is natural stream water so it appears green, unlike the blue-color pool filled with Chlorine. |
