General Information

What is the purpose of this FAQ?
This FAQ has been created in order to answer some of the questions that come up frequently on the Eyrie message boards.
Hopefully, it'll be easier to find the answers there than having to look through all the posts on the boards.

Want to know more about Griever and the Chronicles?

Where can I find The Griever Chronicles?
The Griever Chronicles can be found on TripleFlame.org or on FanFiction.net.

Why did Alicia Felian choose Squall as her guinea pig in the first place?
Alicia chose Squall because he was Rinoa's knight. Alicia wanted to become so powerful that a sorceress could not touch her.
Therefore, by kidnapping and torturing the Knight of the only living sorceress, she could be sure that Rinoa would either be working
to revive Squall or working to avenge his injury. However, Alicia did not count on the GF serums being lethal. By the time SeeD faced
her at the end of Griever, she was already pretty much unbeatable by any normal means

Had the permanent infusions that they recieved not been eventually lethal, would they have been more powerful than the Pride?
No. What made them lethal in the first place was that they would have been more powerful than the Pride.

If Seifer's Ifrit infusion wouldn't have killed him, would he have been stronger than Gwynt's daughter, Vesta?
Seifer would have been slightly stronger than Vesta, but because he would have been of the 'first generation', as she is of the second.
In any long term contest between them Seifer would eventually win because of that.

Would Seifer's attitude toward the Pride been different had he been able to keep his power?
No. He bases his attitude towards them both on very good logic and personal experience - just because he no longer has the power
himself, it does not mean he doesn't remember what he could do.

Would they still be able to junction Guardian Forces if their infusions had not been fatal and were kept?
No

If Seifer still had Killian while he and Fujin still had their power, would he have been a Mageborn and if so what would his power have been, wind or fire or both?
Yes. As to which gift? Flip a coin. Heads he's Ifrit, Tails he's Pandemona. Even 50/50 split.

If Squall and Rinoa had not become Griever yet and still encountered the Pride, would they have handled discovering their existence differently?
Quite likely, yes. Squall would have killed the lot of them personally. It was Rinoa's mercy, and his bond with Rinoa, that threw him
into confusion on this score; as himself fully, given his victimization and his personal experiences with the powers,
he'd have beheaded them himself.

How many Griever Chronicles stories will there be? When will they be completed?
As taken directly from the Eyrie boards:

Griever was the first.

Griever Chronicles: Zell was the second. It took place in basically the same timeframe as Griever; kind of an aftermath-y thing.

Griever Chronicles: Shutat is the third. It's the 'bridge' story - something written to let you see how the world's changed over time, and through Shutat's visions give you an idea of how much more it's going to before the end.

Griever Chronicles: Aidan will be the fourth - yes, I have actually planned this out! The story will show how the first three stories laid the groundwork for Ultimecia's rise; that's something you don't see much of in the game, only the tail end of her ambitions.

Griever Chronicles: Griever's End is the fifth and final story - kind of a coda, really, that will show what the effect of all this has on Squall and Rinoa.

As for when they'll be done. Eventually. They will get done but it will just take a while. If you want to see up-to-the-minute snippets or have a say in what gets written, go here

Got a question about the Pride?

Where can I find the Lion's Pride stories?
Stories of the Pride can be found on TripleFlame.org.

Where did the Pride come from and why do they have those GF powers?
To answer that you'd really have to read Griever and Griever Chronicles: Zell.

When are their birthdays?
Gwynt March 23
Taran April 21
Daear May 1
Caraid May 21
Chwaer May 21
Nodwydd May 30

How do you pronounce their names?
Gwynt gwint
Taran TAR-an
Daear dare
Caraid car-EE-ad
Chwaer kwahr
Nodwydd NOD-with

What do the pride's names mean?
The pride's names are indicative of their powers as a mental shorthand for Soares Detmer, the man who raised them until the age of
ten. The names roughly translate to:

Gwynt 'breeze' or 'puff of wind'
Taran 'peal of thunder'
Daear 'earth'
Caraid 'love'
Chwaer 'sister'
Nodwydd 'needle'

What determines a Mageborn's Eyeshift?
A mageborn's eyeshift is indicative of his or her Gift. This is so the newborn child's gift can be readily identified at birth as Mageborn
powers do not fully develop until puberty. This ties back to the Mageborn's original purpose as weapons of war so that the capabilities
of the new mageborn would be known.

What are the eyeshifts for each gift?
The table below shows the Guardian force, the eyeshift description and the first mageborn of that gift. The year they were born is in brackets

Mageborn Eyeshifts
Guardian Force Eyeshift First (Year)
Alexander White Jerolin ab Taran(24)
Bahamut solid Blue-white Sophis ab Nodwydd(70)

Are Brothers gifted mageborn always born as twins like Caraid and Chwaer?
Yes

What Gifts would non-Brothers twins have? Would they share the same gifts, have opposing gifts or complementary?
Other gifts can also be twins. A common fraternal pairing is Shiva and Leviathan. Twins can never be born with opposing gifts
(like Pandemona/Diablos or Leviathan/Quezacoatl). In families it is common to have a streak of either complementary or opposing
Gifts between siblings.

Will there ever be any Phoenix, Odin or Gilgamesh gifted Mageborn?
No. This is because, since those three are not junctionable, Odine was unable to replicate their effects

How is it possible for there to be other gifts other than those displayed by the Pride?
While the Pride show only Diablos, Quezacoatl, Pandemona, Cactuar and Brothers, Squall was injected with the essence of all 16
known Guardian forces. Therefore, his offspring have the capability to sire children of gifts other than the original five. (Gwynt's
daughter Vesta is an Ifrit gift and Daear's daughter Nissa is a Tonberry Gift)

What effect would being drawn from have on a mageborn?
Drawing from a mageborn would weaken them slightly but not enough to alter the outcome of the fight in single combat.
Theoretically it is possible to kill a mageborn with repeated drawing but you'd probably be dead before you can draw the second
time. (Taran's son Jerolin, having a non-combative gift, might have problems defending himself from a draw were he physically
restrained)

Are mageborn generational skips possible?
Of course. It is possible for a mageborn parent to have a human child, and for that human child to sire a mageborn.

Have scientists ever attempted to experiment on a mageborn?
Possibly, but the problems are several:

One: any mageborn is significantly stronger, faster, etc than any human (hence difficult to capture).

Two: Mageborn are immune to nonmagical chemical alteration, so tranquilizers and poisons are useless

Three, mageborn tend to live either in groups or in utter isolation - meaning either you have family/friends who would miss
them, or you have a damn hard time finding them (see above about physical prowess - hard to sneak up on them when they
hear and smell you long before you can find them).

Any botched attempt is going to cause Trouble, so the incidents tend to involve privately funded scientists who typically disappear.

Have they tried to develop countermeasures in the event the Mageborn try to take over the world?
SeeD is on the record as swearing to wipe the entire race out, to the last child, if such an event were to look like occurring.

Would Squall's water power be stronger than the individual powers of his children?
No. Taran in particular would be able to kill him without barely breaking a sweat as water gifts are extremely weak against lightning.
However, due to the weakening of the gifts through the generations, Squall would be stronger than his descendants

What abilities will the Mageborn lose over time?
Over time, mageborn would lose the more strange powers first like as refining abilities and such. However, this loss happens slowest
among gifts that use their powers on a near-daily basis. The more strange powers manifest in times of great need and after much
training.

Why are Mageborn unable to lie?
The mageborn were originally created to serve as soldiers and therefore it was required that they be incapable of deceit.

Wondering about Guardian Forces, Sorceresses or Knights?

Why does a Sorceress need a Knight?
Basically, if a sorceress uses her power, her power grows to the point where she can no longer contain it. In other words; she has to
use it repeatedly or the pressure from holding it back will kill her. Sorceresses are like springs of magic and like springs, once tapped
can not be stopped again for long. The Knight binds part of his soul to that of his sorceress and by doing so, takes some of the burden
of suppressing the magic. The knight also ensures that their sorceress' do not go insane from their power.

Where can I find stories on how the Guardian Forces came to be>
Well, if you're wondering about how Griever came to be, read Griever and it's Chronicles. Really, the only other GF Larathia's written
a creation story for is Diablos. That story can be found on Tripflame.org or on Fanfiction.net.
It's called Dark Messenger.

Wondering about the Mageborn Chronicles?

What are the Mageborn Chronicles?
The Mageborn Chronicles are basically a chance to write within the Griever Chronicles universe and toy with the idea that is the
mageborn. It's open to pretty much anyone who really wants to stick their toes in the pirhana pit, but there are, and must be, a few
rules for this.

Where can I find the Mageborn Chronicles?
Right now here is the best place to look.

Where can I find a timeline for the Mageborn Chronicles?
The current timeline is currently inaccurate and has therefore been discontinued until the errors are corrected. However, there is a
pictoral representation of Mageborn Lineage (a more verbose way of saying "Family Tree") for the ab Llew line here

Wondering about SeeD or magic?

What is the purpose of the White SeeD?
The white SeeD is the Yin to the Black SeeD's Yang. They work opposite means to the same end which is to prevent the rise of
renegade sorceresses. Where the Black SeeD hunt down and exterminate renegade and insane sorceresses, the White protect, shelter
and provide Knights for sorceresses so that they may never go insane with their power.

How much stronger does the Advanced Junction make the average SeeD member?
The advanced junction does not provide a stat boost per-se. It strengthens the junction holder's relationship with that GF's specialty
and erases the drawbacks of GF use (memory loss). For example, someone with an advanced junction with Bahamut will recieve
visions of the future while a Griever advanced junction grants enhanced regenerative capabilities

Has SeeD's prominence risen over the 500 years between Griever and GC: Shutat?
Yes. To the point where SeeD is seen as an independant entity and the Gardens are no longer permitted to fly over civilized lands
into another country's airspace unless on a predesignated route to their dock-town. SeeD remains a neutral power
accessable to all nations. They are only known to take a public stance on magic-related issues.

If Odine's work had been a complete success, would SeeD have tried to duplicate his research?
Of course

How much has para-magic theory and knowledge advanced? Is SeeD still on the forefront of para-magic technology?
The mageborn's existence has actually put a heavy damper on the study of para-magic theory by world governments. Any
experimentation looks to other governments like attempts to replicate the experiments that produced the mageborn in the first
place, and international sanctions are in place to prevent this happening. SeeD is still on the forefront of
paramagic research because they were created to control the out-of-control magic users like Sorceresses. SeeD
also has a total monopoly on all known Guardian Forces. When a new one manifests, SeeD hunts it down much in the
same manner of hunting a rogue sorceress.

Regarding the gradual loss of magical gifts (Dreaming, Berserker Magic, Blue Magic, Mageborn) over time, would it be possible for these gifts to be recharged in some way?
Possibly

Bunny Hutch? What the??

What exactly is the Bunny Hutch?
The Bunny Hutch is a place to post any stories that could be believed to fit within the universes of the Eyrie (Griever, Lion's Pride,
Triad, BunnyCrash, Mageborn Chronicles). The Bunny Hutch can be found here and if you want to know more about it, look here.
